Toto Wolff was overall extremely pleased with his team’s running in FP1 at the Formula 1 British Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell have a lot of expectations on their shoulders at their home event, but they didn’t let that deter them from a pre-arranged run plan, which did not include any runs on the soft tyres.
As a result, neither Silver Arrow ended in the top 10, but Wolff is adamant that the session went exactly as planned, and he is thrilled with that.
“It was a very good session because we got to test the new front wing and other aero parts,” Wolff told media, including Total-Motorsport.com, after FP1 at the British GP.
“Also seeing how the new tyre performs and generally we got the programme done. We didn’t run the soft tyre so it’s difficult to judge where we will end up.”
Austria an outlier
Mercedes found the going tough one week ago at the Austrian GP where Russell was promoted to seventh, ahead of Hamilton, after post-race penalties were applied.
Wolff, though, has complete faith and confidence in the whole team that they can bounce back to challenging for the podium at Silverstone, where they have gone well in recent history.
“I have firm belief that we have everything needed to bounce back,” Wolff continued. “We had a bad weekend and this car and other teams have been outliers.
“We hoped that it wouldn’t be a track that was an outlier for us but we didn’t go with high expectations and it’s all full of roses.”
