Toto Wolff reveals Mercedes F1 2026 driver line-up deadline amid Verstappen rumours

Mercedes team boss wants clarity on George Russell and Kimi Antonelli before the summer break as speculation grows over Max Verstappen

Toto Wolff has made the Mercedes F1 2026 driver line-up a top priority, setting a clear timeline to finalise the team’s future plans before the end of the summer break.

With ongoing speculation about the futures of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, and mounting rumours of interest in Max Verstappen, Wolff is eager to bring stability to the Silver Arrows as they prepare for a new era.

During the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, Wolff addressed the growing talk around Mercedes’ plans, stating that he does not want to prolong the process for any of the key people involved.

“You need to be respectable towards the stakeholders in all of that process. The organisation, the drivers, everybody. You need to understand the way forward,” Wolff explained to the press in Spielberg.

The situation is particularly pressing as Russell’s contract is set to expire at the end of the year. Meanwhile, rookie Antonelli is under a long-term agreement but has yet to be officially confirmed for the 2026 seat.

On top of that, Verstappen has been linked with a move to Mercedes, despite being contracted with Red Bull until 2028.

Wolff Sets Clock on Mercedes F1 2026 Driver Line-Up Decision

Wolff was quick to clarify that he wants the Mercedes driver line-up for 2026 to be settled between the Hungarian Grand Prix and the Dutch Grand Prix, which surround the sport’s traditional summer break. The Austrian team boss emphasised the importance of decisiveness in the interest of all involved.

“I don’t want to be sadistic in letting a driver wait or not taking any decisions when it should be taken. So I feel we’re in a good space. We’re [in] June,” Wolff said. “Obviously there’s lots of discussions around. I’ve been open with it and transparent.

“And at a certain stage in the next couple of months – until the summer break, we need to know. Until the summer break, everything is going to be done.” When asked if this meant before or after the break, he replied with a smile, “Maybe in the middle.”

Verstappen in the Mix?

The paddock has been buzzing with rumours about Verstappen potentially joining Mercedes, especially after George Russell himself suggested that his contract renewal was being delayed because the team was also considering Verstappen’s future.

Verstappen, a four-time world champion, is still tied to Red Bull but has performance-based clauses in his deal that could see him leave sooner.

“First of all, there is no delay in George’s contract situation because it’s pretty clear since a long time what our timings were,” Wolff told Sky Sports F1 in Austria. “We’ve known each other for such a long time, so there is no such thing as a delay.

“But also as a team principal responsible for the best car brand in the world, it is clear you’re exploring what a four-time world champion is going to do in the future, and that could be a long time in the future. But that has no effect on us putting a signature on George’s contract.”

Wolff has not ruled out any possibilities but insists that both Russell and Antonelli are being strongly considered: “Obviously there’s lots of discussions around. I’ve been open with it and transparent. At a certain stage in the next couple of months, until the summer break, we need to know.”

As Mercedes plot their course into the new regulations and with the driver market more fluid than ever, Wolff’s leadership will be vital in shaping the next chapter for the Silver Arrows.
