Williams boss names Carlos Sainz as top target with Logan Sargeant’s exit all but confirmed

Sainz is out of contract at Ferrari and held negotiations with Red Bull and Mercedes

Carlos Sainz continues hunting for his next Formula 1 seat post-Ferrari and he’s not shy of suitors as the Williams team principal names him as their clear number one target for 2025 to replace Logan Sargeant.

Sargeant came into the sport as a youngster with potential, but he has failed to put it together throughout his time at the team, barely being on the same pace as Alex Albon and only scoring one career point, which came via a double-disqualification for two cars.

So that means he is under pressure and James Vowles has been shopping around, talking to Valtteri Bottas, Kimi Andrea Antonelli and now Sainz, with the 2024 Australian GP winner being their priority after he exits Ferrari at the end of the year.

Sainz is our number one target,” Vowles told Sky Sports F1 in Canada. “There’s a reason why I left Mercedes to come here. This isn’t the Williams of old.

“Having Sainz on our list shows we are prepared to have a driver line-up that I think will be one of the best on the grid, if it’s achieved.”

Sainz has been talking to Mercedes and Red Bull since his exit from Ferrari was confirmed back in February, and now Williams will try to charm the Spaniard too after those two counted him out of contention, with Audi still waiting on his response to an offer.

Part of the allure is said to be the power unit supplied by Mercedes for 2026, with Brixworth being very confident about its competitiveness meaning Williams could shoot up the grid as a customer team.

Vowles gives a war cry: This is a different entity

Sargeant’s exit and Sainz’s signature would come at a time when Williams looks to put to bed its reputation garnered from 2018-2022 when the Grove-based outfit regularly languished at the back of the field and, to be frank, looked hopeless.

In 2019, they didn’t even manage to arrive to testing with a car to put together thanks to production issues and now Vowles has warned the rest of the paddock this is no longer the case thanks to the backing of Dorilton Capital.

They purchased the team in August 2020 and have injected some much needed cash that Claire and Sir Frank Williams could no longer provide to maintain competitiveness and the outfit has gradually got better since then. In 2023, they scored 28 points and finished best of the back four teams indicating an upwards trajectory.

“We are investing tens, if not hundreds of millions back to where it was in terms of success,” Vowles said of the backing by Dorilton. “In the background, there were a number of really great signings that will slowly start edging out in the next few weeks and months.

“This really is a good journey. We are now starting to see the hard work that was started 12 months ago. Williams were a team that were 10th for many years. Last year we were seventh and we started this year poorly but keep an eye out for us. This is a different entity to what it was before.”
