The Austrian GP 2026 was won by George Russell at the Red Bull Ring, with Max Verstappen finishing second and Kimi Antonelli completing the podium.
It was Russell’s second Grand Prix victory of the 2026 Formula 1 season and his first since winning the Australian GP in March. The Mercedes driver started from pole position, controlled the race from the front and held off pressure from Verstappen and Antonelli across a strategic 71-lap contest in Spielberg.
For Russell, it was a vital result in the championship fight, with the British driver taking important points out of Antonelli’s lead after a difficult run of races.
Who won the Austrian GP 2026?
George Russell won the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix after converting pole position into victory at the Red Bull Ring.
The Mercedes driver made a clean start and held the lead into Turn 1, while the race behind him quickly became messy. Antonelli ran wide multiple times in the opening laps, dropping behind the Ferrari drivers and losing time that would prove costly later in the race.
Russell led for most of the afternoon, apart from pit stop cycles, and managed the pressure well as tyre degradation, traffic and strategy threatened to bring Verstappen back into contention.

Red Bull tried to use Verstappen’s race pace and tyre offset to chase down the leader in the second half of the Grand Prix, but Russell kept enough of a margin to stay in control. The gap narrowed late on, especially when traffic briefly helped Verstappen, but the Mercedes driver had enough in hand to secure victory.

Austrian GP 2026 full podium
The full top three from Spielberg:
- George Russell – Mercedes
- Max Verstappen – Red Bull
- Kimi Antonelli – Mercedes
Russell crossed the line ahead of Verstappen, who finished just three tenths clear of Antonelli in the battle for second.
Antonelli came on strongly in the closing stages and got within Overtake Mode range of Verstappen on the final lap, but he could not find a clean way past. It left Verstappen with second place at Red Bull’s home race, while Antonelli had to settle for third after an eventful afternoon.
Key moments from the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix
The start was decisive. Russell launched well from pole and protected the lead, while Lewis Hamilton moved ahead of Charles Leclerc in the opening sequence. Antonelli struggled for grip in the first laps, running wide and losing ground as he tried to recover from fourth on the grid.
That early phase gave Russell the clean air he needed. Verstappen then moved into second after a series of battles involving Hamilton and Leclerc, with the Dutchman showing stronger race pace than Red Bull had displayed across much of the season.

The strategy battle became the key question. Russell, Verstappen and Antonelli all looked capable of influencing the race, with pit stop timing and tyre choice shaping the final stint. Verstappen stayed out longer than Russell before switching to hard tyres, giving himself fresher rubber for the chase.
Antonelli also extended his stint, but a Virtual Safety Car period around Carlos Sainz’s stoppage came at the wrong moment for the championship leader. He had already pitted before the VSC was called, meaning he did not get the cheaper stop others might have hoped for.
Behind the podium fight, Oscar Piastri kept Hamilton behind to take fourth for McLaren, while Ferrari’s race faded badly in the second half. Leclerc struggled on his tyres and dropped behind Lando Norris late on before making another stop.

Austrian GP 2026 top 10
The top 10 finishers in the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix were:
- George Russell – Mercedes
- Max Verstappen – Red Bull
- Kimi Antonelli – Mercedes
- Oscar Piastri – McLaren
- Lewis Hamilton – Ferrari
- Isack Hadjar – Red Bull
- Lando Norris – McLaren
- Charles Leclerc – Ferrari
- Arvid Lindblad – Racing Bulls
- Liam Lawson – Racing Bulls
Racing Bulls enjoyed a strong double-points finish, with Lindblad and Lawson completing the top 10. That result helped the team continue their push towards the front of the midfield.
Ferrari, meanwhile, left Austria with less than they had hoped for. Hamilton finished fifth after being unable to overhaul Piastri, while Leclerc slipped to eighth after struggling badly with tyre life.
What the result means for the championship
The Austrian GP 2026 result was an important one for Russell.
After Antonelli had built major momentum with a run of victories earlier in the season, Russell needed a clean weekend and delivered exactly that. He took pole position, controlled the start and managed the race well enough to secure his second win of the year.
Antonelli still limited the damage by finishing third, especially after a messy opening phase and a strategy that did not play out perfectly. But Russell’s victory cuts into his team mate’s championship advantage and gives Mercedes another major result in what remains a dominant start to the campaign.
For Verstappen, second place was also significant. Red Bull showed stronger race pace than it has for much of 2026, and while he could not quite catch Russell, the Dutchman delivered one of his best drives of the year.
But the headline from Spielberg is clear. George Russell won the Austrian GP 2026.
