The 2025 Spanish Grand Prix may have ended with Oscar Piastri leading a dominant McLaren one-two, but the biggest talking point among F1 fans post-race was a fiery incident involving Max Verstappen and George Russell.
The clash, which took place just after a Safety Car restart in the final laps in Barcelona, has ignited a storm across social media, with fans divided over whether the Red Bull driver’s actions were justified or reckless.
After a Safety Car was deployed due to Kimi Antonelli’s mechanical failure, the field bunched up, setting up a tense dash to the finish. Verstappen, running on the hard compound tyres, struggled for grip as the racing resumed. A collision with Charles Leclerc unsettled him further, and things escalated quickly as he and Russell fought for position into Turn 1.
Russell, battling oversteer behind Leclerc’s Ferrari, made contact with Verstappen while diving down the inside. Verstappen was forced to use the escape road but rejoined ahead. Red Bull soon instructed him to give the position back — a message that did not sit well with the Dutchman.
Verstappen response fuels online uproar
As the pair approached Turn 4, Verstappen slowed, appearing to yield the place. But instead of allowing Russell through cleanly, he carried excessive speed into the corner and hit the Mercedes on entry. The move earned Verstappen a 10-second time penalty and three penalty points, dropping him to 10th and leaving him close to a one-race ban.
When asked if he had deliberately made contact with Russell, Verstappen replied bluntly: “Does it matter?”

The remark quickly became a lightning rod for debate among F1 fans. One user posted, “Very immature response from a 4-time driver’s champion. It’s also a very frightening response as it shows intent and no remorse.” Another added, “Intent matters. Character matters.”
But others came to the Red Bull star’s defence. “It’s motorsport,” argued one fan. “George didn’t die, and literally no damage came from it.” Another noted Verstappen’s increasing frustration, saying, “He’s a champion with a s*** team right now. It’s reasonable frustration.”
Former drivers and analysts have also weighed in. Anthony Davidson said from the SkyPad, “I think it’s intentional. And I don’t like to see that.” Nico Rosberg echoed those concerns, comparing the act to incidents in F1 history that warranted harsher punishment.
