Max Verstappen’s quest for pole at the 2025 British Grand Prix took an unexpected twist at Silverstone, thanks to a crucial assist from Kimi Antonelli that revealed a surprising new alliance between the reigning world champion and Mercedes’ promising rookie.

Just a week after a dramatic collision in Austria, Verstappen and Antonelli have moved beyond rivalry to forge a mutual respect that’s capturing the attention of the Formula 1 paddock.

With Silverstone’s high-speed corners and unpredictable wind conditions challenging even the most seasoned drivers, Verstappen found himself with a little help from an unexpected source.

The Dutch driver acknowledged after the session at Silverstone that Antonelli gave him a valuable tow down the straights, a gesture that may have made all the difference in his pursuit of pole position.

“He helped me a little bit on my lap,” Verstappen told Sky Sports F1. “Kimi gave me a bit of a tow. We’re gonna eat pasta together.”

The offer was more than a lighthearted quip; it was a signal that the tension from last week’s clash had fully dissipated, replaced by camaraderie and sportsmanship.

From collision to camaraderie

The budding rapport between Verstappen and Antonelli is all the more remarkable considering their recent history. At the Austrian Grand Prix just one week ago, Antonelli’s misjudged braking sent both cars into early retirement on the opening lap. In the aftermath, Verstappen chose to respond with calm understanding, rather than criticism.

“I just asked what happened, because he was the only car that was there with me with his wheel hanging off, so I was like, maybe, well, I’m pretty sure that he hit me,” Verstappen recalled.

“Then of course I saw the footage once I came back and it happens. Every driver has made a mistake like that. Everyone has made a mistake like that in their careers and also Kimi is a very big talent, so he learns from that and that’s all fine.”

Antonelli’s apology was quickly accepted. “It’s of course very nice. But for me, it was already case closed. I saw what happened and no one does these things on purpose — it can happen,” Verstappen said.

Antonelli would receive a three-place grid penalty for the Austria incident, but rather than let frustration fester, Verstappen’s response set the tone for a more positive relationship.

The narrative quickly shifted at Silverstone. Instead of holding a grudge, Verstappen and Antonelli found common ground. The Italian rookie’s tow during qualifying was a small but meaningful gesture, a sign of respect and, perhaps, an attempt to make amends for Austria. Verstappen’s suggestion of dinner together was another sign of growing friendship.

Heading into Sunday’s race, Verstappen starts from pole with Oscar Piastri of McLaren alongside, while Antonelli aims to deliver a strong performance for Mercedes. As the weekend unfolds, fans are just as eager to see what happens off the track as on it, with Verstappen and Antonelli’s budding friendship adding a new layer of intrigue to the British Grand Prix narrative.
