Tow truck collides with advertising board during Austrian GP support race

Chaos at the Red Bull Ring as Porsche Supercup start is halted by trackside accident – but F1 main event remains on course

-

Austrian GP support race day brought an unexpected interruption as a tow truck collided with an overhead advertising board at the Red Bull Ring, delaying the start of the Porsche Supercup support race. The incident left spectators and teams stunned as race officials rushed to clear the debris and assess the track for safety, but Formula 1’s main Grand Prix schedule was ultimately left untouched.

Shortly before midday, the Porsche Supercup was set to begin as the next chapter in a packed Austrian GP weekend. That plan was quickly derailed when a tow truck, returning a stranded Formula 2 car to the pits, crashed into an advertising banner spanning the circuit’s second straight. The collision shattered the support beams, causing the structure to collapse across the racing line.

Crowds watched as marshals and repair teams hurried to remove debris, with the scheduled 11:45 local start for the Supercup put on hold. Track sector four was declared clear at 12:19 CET, and fortunately, no injuries were reported in the aftermath. Organizers immediately assured fans and teams that the main Austrian Grand Prix – set for 15:00 local time – would go ahead as planned, unaffected by the support race disruption.

The timing of the incident meant the Formula 2 feature race had already concluded, with Richard Verschoor taking victory, but the Porsche Supercup grid was left waiting as the track was restored to racing condition. The sight of a collapsed advertising bridge and the quick intervention of support vehicles highlighted both the unpredictability of live motorsport and the efficiency of the Red Bull Ring’s response team.

Race officials keep Austrian Grand Prix on track after support race incident

This was not the first challenge for stewards and marshals during an action-packed weekend in Spielberg. Saturday’s F1 qualifying saw Lewis Hamilton spark a grass fire at the final corner after running wide during Q1. That incident brought out the red flags and required marshals to extinguish the flames quickly. To prevent further risk, officials dampened the surrounding grass ahead of Sunday’s racing.

Despite the morning’s chaos, the focus soon returned to the main Formula 1 grid. Lando Norris stormed to pole position for McLaren with a stunning lap half a second clear of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, ensuring a front row filled with intrigue.

Oscar Piastri starts third for McLaren, with Hamilton completing the second row after a strong showing in qualifying. With the grid set and repairs completed, anticipation for the Austrian Grand Prix reached new heights.

The 2025 race at the Red Bull Ring has already delivered surprises before the lights go out, and fans can expect more drama as the action unfolds this afternoon. The Porsche Supercup, after a short delay, was ready to run, while the Formula 1 event prepares to deliver its own spectacle on one of the sport’s most scenic and challenging tracks.
