Enraged Toto Wolff hits back at ‘lunatic’ accusations of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton sabotage

An email allegedly from a Mercedes F1 employee accused the team of sabotaging Lewis Hamilton's final season with the team and even threatening his life

Toto Wolff attempted to rubbish rumours that Mercedes are deliberately sabotaging Lewis Hamilton in his final season at the team, after an email supposedly from a team employee was sent to Formula 1 journalists detailing those accusations.

George Russell leads their 2024 qualifying battle 8-1 ahead of the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix, beaten him in six races and scored Mercedes‘ only pole position and podium despite Hamilton finishing five places and 59 points ahead in 2023.

With Hamilton joining Ferrari in 2025, an alleged Mercedes employee accused the team of ‘a systematic sabotaging of Lewis, his car, his tyre strategy, his race strategy and his mental health’ and added some of their actions could be ‘life threatening’ to Hamilton, other drivers or spectators.

“So it’s not from a member of the team,” Wolff told members of the press including Total-Motorsport.com. “It was when we’re getting these kinds of emails and we’re getting tonnes of them. It’s upsetting, particularly when there’s somebody’s talking about death and all these things.

“I don’t know what some of the conspiracy theorists and lunatics think out there. Lewis was part of the team for 12 years, we have a friendship and we trust each other.

“We want to win this, we want to end this on a high, we want to celebrate the relationship and if you don’t believe all of that, you can believe that we want to win the constructors’ championship and part of the constructors’ championship is making both cars win. So to all of all of these mad people out there, take a shrink.”

Mercedes involve police in search for sabotage sender

Wolff insisted Mercedes wouldn’t be cowed by the attack and added he’s deployed every resource possible to track down the person behind the alleged leak.

Hamilton and Mercedes combined for 15 world championships in eight years and have become synonymous with each other despite the recent downturn in results since 2022.

Hamilton hasn’t won a race since the 2021 Saudi Arabian GP and Wolff reportedly only found out about his switch to Ferrari shortly before it was announced to the public. However, the team principal has reiterated that he and Hamilton still have a good working relationship built on that success, and his response to the ‘leak’ seems to back that up.

“On this particular one, I’ve instructed to go full force,” Wolff added. “We have the police inquiring, we’re researching the IP address, we’re researching the phone, all of that because online abuse in that way needs to stop.

“People can’t hide behind their phones or their computers and abuse teams or drivers in a way like this.”
