Theo Pourchaire discusses 2024 prospects after sealing F2 title

Theo Pourchaire currently has no drive for the 2024 season in any motorsport category

Theo Pourchaire has admitted that nothing is certain over his plans for 2024, after sealing the 2023 Formula 2 championship title in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Pourchaire and championship rival Frederik Vesti battled right to the end of the campaign but it was the former who took the crown on the final day, meaning he now has to leave the series and find a drive elsewhere.

The hope naturally would have been to graduate to Formula 1, but that looks a closed shop next season for the Alfa Romeo junior with only Logan Sargeant‘s seat at Williams up for grabs.

“I don’t know what I’ll do next season exactly,” Pourchaire said in his post-race champion’s press conference.

“But I’ll prove myself as much as possible and I hope one day I will have my chance in Formula 1. That’s my dream and I’m close to it. I will give everything to achieve it.”

Super Formula an option

Pourchaire is the third consecutive F2 champion to not make the step up to F1 the following season after Oscar Piastri and Felipe Drugovich experienced the same dilema.

Expanding on the issue, the Frenchman accepted that there was no space for him in F1 next year, and explained why driving in another strong series is of paramount importance to him in 2024.

“I’m of course disappointed [there’s no F1 seat],” continued Pourchaire. “My biggest dream is to be an F1 driver and F1 world champion but there’s no space for next year and it’s ok.

“I’m 20 years old, I’m super young, the team (Sauber) is helping me a lot. They have helped me since Formula 3 so I’m confidfent I can have a seat in the future.

“At the end of the 2024 season there will be a lot of drivers out of contract so I will try to keep myself busy next year, show myself as much as possible and I’m an F2 champion now so it’s different, before that I had no major titles in my career so it changes a lot of things.

“It’s very important [I drive in 2024]. I want to keep racing because of my physical and mental shape, being involved in a championship and under pressure is really important. I don’t want to go to F1 with a year without driving. I think I have to drive next year and show myself again in a competitive series if I want to get into F1.”

It was put to Pourchaire whether Super Formula might be the ticket for him next year, with Liam Lawson showing what benefits it can have if and when you get a chance in F1.

Lawson showed it’s a great category for that because as soon as he was in an F1 car he was really quick,” answered Pourchaire.

Super Formula is a great car, the tracks are difficult like Suzuka, it’s important to be confident and to trust the car and that’s what F1 is about. But nothing is sure yet and I’m in some talks with some teams and with the Sauber academy about the financial side.”
