Steiner: Magnussen Brazilian GP sprint pole “not luck”

Magnussen secured the team's first ever pole position in Sao Paolo for the Brazilian GP Sprint Race.

Haas team boss Guenther Steiner has said that Kevin Magnussen’s shock pole position for the Brazilian GP sprint race was a well deserved results as the team celebrated its first-ever front row qualifying.

Magnussen secured pole in Sao Paolo after a red flag due to a crash by George Russell which brought the session to a premature end with the Dane having set the fastest time beforehand.

That prompted jubilant scenes in the Haas garage, with the driver saying to his engineer “you are f**king kidding me” as the team tentatively celebrated a landmark result.

While the session resumed, the wet conditions had gotten worse and the drivers all eventually came back in, confirming the dramatic pole for Magnussen.

Deserved result

Speaking to Sky Sports following the qualifying session, Steiner said that the result was nothing to do with luck, but from the work the team has put in over its time in F1.

“I think it was not not luck it was well deserved from the driver from the team being on the on the right tyre at the right time Kevin put the lap down when it was needed,” he said.

“It’s nice to have that he was first out there we can say yes it’s an advantage, but a disadvantage. We had nobody to engage with, he was on his own. Then it was locked down and it stuck.”

And Steiner credited the efforts of the entire Haas team as well as Magnussen, with who the team principal has had fiery moments with in the past, with the result.

“I think he deserves it. The whole team deserves that and he’s part of the team. I always say the drive is just part of the team, so I think we always work hard. We never give up we keep on fighting you know, and they always have naysayers, but that may come to all to se our pole position.”
