Spanish GP weather update: What is the F1 race forecast like?

Conditions have been dry in Barcelona for the drivers, but the forecasted threat of rain could throw a spanner in the works during Sunday's race

-

The 2024 Spanish GP weather is usually one of the most reliable tracks when it comes to expecting sunshine and soaring temperatures, but the threat of rainy conditions in Catalonia could derail Lando Norris’ chances of victory on Sunday, so lets take a look at the Spanish GP weather update in Barcelona.

The McLaren star secured only the second pole position of his career on Saturday, pipping Max Verstappen by 0.02 of a second in a thrilling battle for the front grid spot.

Norris will be hoping for an uneventful race as he looks to collect his second victory of the season, having already clinched his maiden win in Miami earlier this season.

Despite murky clouds hovering above the circuit in Montmelo on Friday and Saturday, the rain stayed away for the entire hour-long qualifying session, allowing the drivers to put the pedal to the floor knowing they would have maximum grip on the dry surface.

It did mean that they would need to keep a close eye on which tyre sets they were using and how many would be used up, given that their tyre allowances are limited unless there are wet weather conditions.

But that remains a distinct possibility heading into the 66-lap race at the Circuit de Barcelona.

Spanish GP Weather Update

The official Formula 1 weather forecast predicted that Sunday would be most cloudy, with a moderate chance of showers in the morning and 40 per cent chance of rain. An improvement in weather conditions is expected for race hours.

The maximum air temperature is set at 25C, with a southerly breeze and gusts up to 19 mph during the race.

But just four hours before the start of the race on Sunday, the rain arrived in Barcelona during the Formula 3 event, where several drivers reported light rain at several corners. Unlike the famous idiom, the rain in Spain fell on the track – not the plane.

However, there may be some good news for Norris, who lost his chance for victory in the wet in Sochi back in 2021. The race itself is set to be a dry affair, at least in terms of expected precipitation, as it is forecasted to stop raining before the race starts.

That doesn’t mean the track won’t be damp, though, which may cause some issues for the drivers in the first laps as they attempt to rubber in the track surface.
