F1 2024 Spanish GP – Practice 1 Results

Lando Norris was fastest in Practice 1 at the 2024 Spanish GP heading the FP1 results ahead of Max Verstappen in Barcelona

As the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix race weekend got underway, Lando Norris set the fastest time in Free Practice 1 in his McLaren, just ahead of Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, don’t miss the complete Spanish GP FP1 results.

On a hot afternoon at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, saw lots of on track action as intrigue engulfed the paddock as recent competition to Red Bull will be put to the test in Spain. Norris secured the fastest lap with a time of 1m 14.228s, edging out Verstappen by just 0.024s, despite the Dutchman experiencing clutch issues.

Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari was just 0.344s behind Norris, though the Spaniard did not run the soft tyre in the session and set his best time on the medium tyre. The session was relatively quiet other than a brief red flag after some debris that fell off Fernando Alonso‘s front wing.

Teams used the opening part of the session for testing, particularly those who had brought upgrades for the weekend in Barcelona. Others focused on maximising the potential of updates already introduced.

Issues and frustration in FP1 session

Among the early runners was Oliver Bearman, who took over Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas for the second of his six scheduled practice sessions in 2024. Sergio Perez reported issues with his throttle pedal. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc expressed his frustration, stating, “The car is horrendous for now.”

Post the red flag period, traffic issues emerged with most of the field back on track. Charles Leclerc was notably irritated by Lance Stroll’s positioning, describing it as being “in the middle of the corner as always.”

George Russell was the fastest Mercedes in fourth in the Spanish GP FP1 results, followed by Perez in fifth and Norris’ teammate, Oscar Piastri, in sixth. Lewis Hamilton was seventh, ahead of Esteban Ocon’s Alpine, Alonso’s Aston Martin, with Alex Albon in the Williams, rounding out the top 10.

Leclerc finished the session in 11th, with Valtteri Bottas 12th for Sauber as they continue to search for their first points of the season. Pierre Gasly placed 13th in his Alpine, followed by Stroll in 14th and Daniel Ricciardo in 15th, with Ricciardo running a significant upgrade on his RB.

Zhou Guanyu finished 16th for Sauber, with Kevin Magnussen 17th in the Haas and Logan Sargeant 18th for Williams. Bearman and Yuki Tsunoda concluded the Spanish GP FP1 results in 19th and 20th, respectively.
