Silverstone track changes announced for 2024 British GP

The 2024 British GP completes F1's triple-header and will see Mercedes and Ferrari try to join Max Verstappen and Lando Norris at the front

-

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris will reignite their battle on a revised Silverstone at the 2024 British Grand Prix as the FIA revealed changes to the circuit that look set to more heavily penalise drivers who go off the track.

All the changes to the Silverstone track affect kerbs or runoff areas rather than the circuit itself, but are still likely to influence the race if Verstappen and Norris repeat their brawl from the Austria GP.

The pair have enjoyed a friendly relationship off the track but their tussles on the Red Bull Ring didn’t reflect that, battling it out in both the grand prix and sprint race.

Norris forced Verstappen off the circuit at turn three before the Dutchman repaid the favour soon afterwards, squeezing the McLaren too hard on the outside before contact that gave both drivers a puncture and allowed Mercedes’ George Russell to swoop through and take his second grand prix win.

What are the Silverstone track changes?

Both Mercedes will hope to challenge on home soil – it would be a first British GP win for Russell and Hamilton‘s ninth, setting the record for the most at a single event.

McLaren‘s Oscar Piastri was competing as a British driver when he last won at Silverstone in Formula Renault Eurocup on the way to his 2019 title, and also benefitted from his teammate’s tiff with Verstappen by taking his second podium of 2024 – he was unlucky to miss out on the British GP rostrum 12 months ago.

While Ferrari will also want to rejoin the fight at the front, but Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have also got overly familiar in recent races and will need to take care of the Silverstone track changes announced at the Loop, Chapel, the final chicane, Club, Abbey and Stowe:

  1. The combination kerb at Turn 3 on the right-hand side has been removed.
  2. A new gravel bed has been installed at Turn 14 on the left, while the gravel bed on the left at Turn 15 has been extended by 6-8m towards the track.
  3. The asphalt run-off at Turn 16 on the right-hand side has been reduced to 1.7m and filled with gravel.
  4. The combination kerb at Turn 16 has been replaced with grass.
  5. The asphalt strip between Turn 18 and Turn 1 on the left side has been replaced with grass.
  6. A new tyre barrier with conveyor has been installed on the right side in Turn 15 and in Turn 16 in the run-off.
