Sergio Perez trusts Red Bull despite safety car controversy as grid penalty awaits in Barcelona

The Mexican driver received a lot of criticism following a crash in Canada but admits he would do exactly the same again

Red Bull driver Sergio Perez has stressed that he trusts his team to make the right calls after a week full of criticism after the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix

The Mexican crashed in Montreal and had serious damage to the back of his Red Bull car, but he was instructed by the team to drive the car back to the pits rather than pull over and be recovered.

The speculation was that Red Bull had asked the driver to get back to the pits as they knew a potential safety car would hinder Max Verstappen’s chances of winning the F1 race. Perez has since been hit with a three-place grid penalty for the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix for staying on track with a damaged car.

Given there is constant focus on Perez and his performance levels, arguably even more so since Red Bull awarded him with a contract extension, he got a lot of the criticism that was perhaps meant for the team.

Perez would do the same thing again

As far as Perez is concerned, he would do the same thing again in the same situation as he trusts the orders that his team hands out.

“Nothing differently, because I fully trust my team in what they tell me to do,” Perez said, when asked by the press, including Total-Motorsport.com, what he would do in that situation again.

“At the time, I didn’t have any visibility with my mirrors. I think all the drivers were in the same boat because of the race. They were full of dust, so I had no idea about the damage.

“I think we’ve seen a lot of similar incidents in the past or just a few races ago and nothing has happened, so we were a little bit surprised, but nothing we can do now.”

Red Bull took P1 and P4 in Spain in 2023, but Perez admits that with the grid penalty it would be very impressive to repeat that same success.

“Well, considering the grid penalty, I think if we are able to be the team that gets out of here with the most points, this weekend will be a good one. To be able to get back to the podium will be the target,” Perez stated.
