Sergio Perez to remain at Red Bull: New longer contract at end of F1 season?

Sergio Perez will sit down with Red Bull at the end of the season to discuss his future

Sergio Perez will discuss the possibility of a new contract with Red Bull at the end of the 2023 Formula 1 season, and has no plans to retire at the end of this year.

After dominating April’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Perez‘s form nosedived, failing to win a race and is over 251 points behind his triple-world champion teammate Max Verstappen in the drivers’ championship.

Following a disastrous Qatar GP, where Perez finished a distant 10th, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner admitted he needed the Mexican to refind his form. At the 2023 United States GP, Perez ridiculed rumours he would retire from F1.

Total-Motorsport.com understands talks between Perez and Red Bull over a renegotiated new contract will take place in December, so the 33-year-old can focus on securing second in the drivers’ championship.

One key topic of the negotiations will be the length of the deal, with the possibility of a new two-year contract that would begin in 2024 and end in 2025, thus overriding the final year of his current deal with Red Bull.

Perez’s checkered career

Since making his debut for Sauber in 2011, Perez has enjoyed a successful F1 career, winning six Grand Prix from 254 starts and building a reputation as an expert in tyre management.

Perez was also credited with keeping Force India afloat in 2018 after starting administration proceedings against the team as a creditor, preventing a winding-up order from taking place, and saving 400 jobs.

Despite his off-track heroics, he faced the end of his F1 career in 2020 after Ferrari departee Sebastian Vettel was signed to drive for Aston Martin in 2021, leaving Perez without a drive.

His penultimate race for Racing Point at the 2020 Sakhir GP would ultimately save his F1 career as a masterful drive from last impressed Horner, who signed him to Red Bull for 2021, replacing Alex Albon.

Perez was instrumental in helping secure Verstappen‘s first world championship in 2021 following some ultra-defensive driving in the Abu Dhabi GP, which helped his teammate close within a second of title rival Lewis Hamilton.

The relationship between the pair became strained after Verstappen refused to let Perez for sixth position in the final laps of the 2022 Brazilian GP, costing his teammate second in the drivers’ championship to Charles Leclerc.
