Sergio Perez Looking to Make a Return to F1 in 2026

-

In 2024, the Mexican racing driver Sergio Perez left the F1 Red Bull racing team after four years and an especially tough season. Now, rumors all around are saying that he’s looking to make a comeback.

Today, we’ll discover if it’s more than just talk. Will we actually see Sergio Perez back on the F1 tracks in 2026?

Sergio Perez’s History With Formula 1

Sergio has extensive experience with Formula 1, having been a competing driver for a total of 14 years.

In 2011, Perez joined the Sauber team, replacing Nick Heidfeld and becoming the fifth Mexican to compete in Formula One. In his first race, he impressed observers by stopping to change tires only once – the only driver in the race to make fewer than two stops – and coming in at seventh. However, he later ended up disqualified from the race for infringing technical regulations.

In the next few races, he struggled for different reasons, but then finished in ninth place in Spain, finally taking his first Formula One points.

Red Bull and Winning Streaks

After an eventful and largely successful stretch of time in his career, Sergio Perez joined the Red Bull Team in 2021. He did very well for a few seasons, placing second in the driver’s championship in 2023 behind teammate Max Verstappen. Then things went awry, and his worst season since joining Red Bull began in 2024.

An Early End to the Contract

Despite the previous impressive seasons, 2024 was winless. Sergio departed from the team on mutual agreement with him and Red Bull, ending the four-year contract prematurely. Perez’s struggles were caused largely by issues with Red Bull’s RB20 car, notoriously difficult to drive.

That much became clear to more people when his replacement, Liam Lawson, was swapped out after only two races. He was then replaced by experienced Yuki Tsunoda. The rapid swap of Liam Lawson showed both the Red Bull team and the audience how difficult the car really is to drive. “Now, all of a sudden, people realize how difficult the car is to drive,” Perez commented.

He’s also expressed his support for Tsunoda, saying he thinks he has the “right attitude” to cope with the difficult seat. The 35-year-old Mexican driver was disappointed with how things turned out, expressing that he feels he didn’t get to show what he’s able to do as a driver.

“I need time to recharge,” Perez told interviewers back in December 2024, but now he seems about ready to be back on track again.

A Return to F1 in 2026?

2026 looks hopeful for Perez, and fans are excited about the prospect of their favorite racer returning to F1 and finally getting the chance to show what he can do. Anyway, Sergio’s return to F1 in 2026 is confirmed to be more than just rumors, as Sergio himself confirms. Sergio Perez explains that since he left the Red Bull Team in December 2024, he’s been approached by several interested teams. He tells interviewers that although he’s definitely interested in having a place in Formula 1 again, he says that he’s only coming back if “the project makes sense” and it’s something that he can enjoy.

Since his contract with Red Bull ended, Perez has spent most of his time at home in Mexico with family. It’s been the first time he’s been able to take a significant break from the extensive travel of being an F1 driver for nearly two decades. He tells interviewers it’s been great to have time to step back and see things from the outside for a little bit.

Is the six-time Grand Prix winner really about to be back on the racing track, then?

“Once I Know All My Options, I Will Make a Decision.”

While Sergio is in serious talks with different teams and fans are on the edge of their seats, the champion is not in a rush to make a decision. He wants to find a project that fully motivates him and one where he feels fully supported by his team.

“That’s why I’ve given myself at least six months to get all my options on the table and make a decision on what I do next with my career,” he adds in an exclusive interview with Formula 1.

A Future With Cadillac or Alpine in the Works?

While Sergio is talking to a few teams, one especially stands out.

Perez is allegedly talking to the F1 team Cadillac, led by Team Principal Graeme Lowdon. Fans are excited about the prospect of Sergio Perez returning to Formula One so soon, and Cadillac is especially sparking excitement and buzz on social media. However, the Alpine F1 team has recently joined the competition to win over this experienced pilot.

We’re yet to see how things will unfold in the end, but the new F1 season will be even more interesting with Perez at the wheel.
