For some fans of Formula One, watching the action unfold in real life is supplemented by a foray into the virtual world. Over the years, fanatical Formula 1 fans have enjoyed a plethora of iconic games based on the sport. These games serve up entertainment while also enabling fans to take on the role of their racing heroes.
There has generally always been an appetite for games from this particular category. Offering high-octane racing action and the various intricacies that surround the sport, making every point crucial in the battle for supremacy is just as appealing in the gaming sphere as it is in real life. Alongside listening to podcasts, reading interviews with the drivers, and enjoying some F1 betting ahead of the biggest races, fans everywhere have always dabbled in gaming. The sheer amount of F1 games that have come to the fore highlights just how important the sport is in the gaming category of entertainment, although some titles have certainly fared better than others.
In fact, it’s fair to say that this somewhat niche genre of sports gaming hasn’t always delivered the finest products. From lazy cash grabs to examples containing horrific gameplay, the shoddy releases will never be forgotten by some diehard F1 gamers. Overall, though, the genre has been treated to more masterpieces than undoubted flops. Let’s take a look at some of them below.
F1 2019
We’ve seen a number of F1 iterations entertain gaming audiences over the years, but not many of them come close to F1 2019. This PS4 and Xbox One favourite is still being sampled in 2025, highlighting its impact on the genre. The game’s random driver swaps were particularly popular, with players of the game getting plenty of satisfaction from this game-changing inclusion in the title’s career mode aspect. As the season progressed, drama continued to ensue, and epic races were enjoyed as players attempted to top the rankings in a truly exhilarating title. When assessing the various F1 games that gamers have been exposed to in terms of delivering pure entertainment, none of them come close to F1 2019. F1 2002 also deserves a mention, though, with many fans preferring that particular instalment of the game. One thing’s for sure: both games can be considered as success stories.
Formula One Championship Edition
If you’re a more senior gamer who enjoyed classic consoles like the PlayStation 3, then you might remember Formula One Championship Edition. Released in 2007, this much-loved game is a classic title many gamers will never forget. Also available to play on the PS2, this particular version offered a large number of technical improvements that elevated it even further. From its glorious graphics to its realism aspect, it’s a beloved title that impacted the genre, given the large population of gamers and F1 fans alike who seem to adore it.
F1 Challenge ’99-’02
Seen as the very best title this specific genre has ever witnessed, F1 Challenge ’99-’02 was an undisputed masterpiece at the time of its release. Sure, it might not stand up against some of today’s sophisticated products, but in terms of serving up sheer enjoyment and some unbeatable F1 racing action, F1 Challenge ’99-’02 was exceptional. The game came out in 2003 on popular platforms at the time like the GameCube and the PlayStation 2, and it hit the spot with gaming audiences. In fact, there is a strong argument to suggest that this iconic product still hasn’t been bettered. The game was based around the last four competitions of F1 at the time, with a huge range of tracks and drivers for gamers to experience. Throw in its stunning textures, its top physics, and the engaging gameplay that kept players firmly engrossed in the action, and F1 Challenge ’99-’02 was a blast to session, be it as a solitary gaming package or with a friend in a multiplayer marathon.

F1 Manager 2022

In F1 Manager 2022, this iteration of the product was full of top-notch inclusions, and it has become known for its detail. A title you can still play today if you’re able to track it down, the game offered superb gameplay, a plethora of fantastic features, and its visuals are immaculate. Also providing players with numerous aspects they could tweak in order to bring success to their teams, this truly authentic title delivered in all areas. Playable on platforms like the PS5 and on Xbox One, F1 Manager 2022 is a game many F1 fans still rave about today.

RFactor
If you regard yourself as a diehard F1 fan who has been partial to gaming titles in this area over the years, then you might remember RFactor. While it isn’t the very best game on the list, it managed to satisfy fans of the sport and gamers alike when it was released in 2005 on Windows. The custom tracks were brilliant; they provided an authentic simulation to explore, and its realistic physics were some of the most spectacular ever seen at the time. While RFactor is occasionally forgotten by some Formula 1 gamers, others will always speak positively about it. It’s a great title.

Grand Prix 4
A release from 2002 that many PC gamers will fondly remember, Grand Prix 4 was clearly ahead of its time. The title’s dynamic physics were impressively accurate, while the game’s graphics were crisp enough despite being over two decades old. Even though the title’s bugs and some other notable teething issues hindered its launch, Grand Prix 4 recovered to become an award-winning proposition with a huge community of gamers behind it. Sure, it wasn’t perfect, but Grand Prix 4 has clearly inspired many games that have come to the fore since. It was excellent.
