Tension at Red Bull: Verstappen family pushes for major shakeup

Power struggle at Red Bull erupts as Max Verstappen’s camp calls for structural changes and Christian Horner’s future hangs in the balance

The Red Bull management crisis has returned to the spotlight, with the Verstappen family reportedly demanding a fundamental overhaul of the team’s leadership.

As rumours swirl around the Formula 1 paddock, Christian Horner’s once-unshakable position as team principal is under scrutiny, and Mercedes are carefully monitoring the unfolding drama in hopes of attracting Max Verstappen should he become available.

The normally solid foundation at Red Bull is showing cracks as the Verstappen camp, led by Max’s influential father Jos, calls for significant changes in how the team is run, as another management crisis threatens to engulf the team.

According to German outlet Auto Motor und Sport, the Verstappens have made it clear: unless Horner’s grip on power is loosened or leadership is shared, the future of the reigning world champion with Red Bull could be in jeopardy.

Although Max Verstappen is contracted through 2028, performance-based clauses mean that if he falls outside the top three in the Drivers’ Championship before the summer break, he could walk away. While that threshold has not yet been crossed, with George Russell just nine points back, the risk of a shock exit is growing.

What is at stake is more than a single personality clash. The Verstappens want a more collaborative approach, similar to the leadership structure at McLaren, where responsibilities are shared among several executives. Currently, Horner holds authority not just over racing operations, but also technical development, engine projects, and marketing, creating what some perceive as a one-man rule.

Old divisions are resurfacing within Red Bull, with the Verstappen and Helmut Marko-aligned Austrian faction now in open conflict with the Thai owners, who have long supported Horner.

The aftermath of Horner’s 2023 internal investigation and the brand’s recent stumbles on and off the track have reportedly eroded the unwavering support he once enjoyed. As a result, some voices within Red Bull now see a leadership transition as a necessary move to keep Max Verstappen at the heart of their project.

Mercedes waits as Red Bull faces uncertainty

The situation has drawn the attention of rival teams, none more so than Mercedes. Team principal Toto Wolff has made little secret of his admiration for Verstappen, and sources indicate Mercedes are ready to make a play if the Dutchman becomes available.

The potential signing of Verstappen would complicate Mercedes’ driver lineup, forcing difficult decisions over Kimi Antonelli and George Russell—but the lure of the reigning champion may prove irresistible.

Meanwhile, Red Bull faces the immense challenge of replacing Christian Horner if the Verstappen family’s demands are met. After more than 20 years at the helm, Horner’s experience and paddock network are not easily replaced. Though names like Peter Bayer and Andreas Seidl have been mentioned as alternatives, there is no obvious successor ready to step in.

As the 2025 season progresses, every race feels like another move in a high-stakes chess match. Verstappen’s contract may keep him in place for now, but the behind-the-scenes maneuvering has put both Red Bull’s stability and his future in doubt.

Until a resolution is found—one that balances on-track performance with internal harmony—the possibility remains that Mercedes could land the sport’s top talent, fundamentally reshaping the F1 landscape.
