Oscar Piastri hints at unpredictable F1 battle as British Grand Prix grid tightens

McLaren star Oscar Piastri says there is no obvious favorite ahead of Sunday’s British GP after missing pole by a whisker

Oscar Piastri is bracing for a wild, unpredictable contest at Silverstone after missing out on pole position for the 2025 British Grand Prix to Max Verstappen by just a tenth of a second in one of the closest qualifying sessions of the Formula 1 season.

With McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari all stacking up within less than a quarter of a second, Piastri believes Sunday’s race could come down to the finest of details, with multiple teams in with a genuine shot at victory.

McLaren set the early pace in Friday’s practice sessions, with Piastri and teammate Lando Norris appearing to hold a slim advantage. But overnight adjustments to the Red Bull saw Verstappen rocket back into contention, ultimately edging Piastri for the top spot in Q3.

Just behind, George Russell put his Mercedes into fourth, and both Ferrari drivers kept themselves within striking distance in what was arguably the most tightly packed grid of the year. Piastri’s final lap in Q3 was scruffy by his standards, and he was left to reflect on what might have been.

“I was happy with the first lap,” Piastri told the media, including Total-Motorsport.com, after British Grand Prix qualifying. “The first lap was mega, to be honest. I was trying to think how I was going to go faster and I didn’t.

“The last lap was a little bit messy, but it’s been tight all weekend. I think the first lap was very good. I don’t know how much the track would have improved. A little bit on the table — we’ll never know if it was enough.”

Silverstone grid set for a thriller with no runaway leader

Heading into Sunday’s British Grand Prix, Piastri expects the outcome to be determined by tiny margins, with each of the front-running teams showing different strengths across the fast, flowing Silverstone circuit.

“It’s going to be a fun race,” Piastri added. “It has been very evenly matched between us, Max, the Ferraris — I saw even George get up there at the end.

“I think it’s going to be a pretty evenly paced race tomorrow. All of us have got slightly different strengths. The Red Bull is very quick in a straightline. We’ve been just a bit quicker in the high speed. So it’s going to be a fun one.”

The Australian driver’s remarks reflect the reality that there is no clear favorite heading into Sunday. While Red Bull’s straightline speed could be a decisive factor, McLaren’s high-speed grip and Ferrari’s balance in mixed conditions will also play crucial roles. Mercedes, with Russell starting fourth, also cannot be discounted.

Piastri credited his team for their willingness to push the envelope. “The team has done a great job of trying a lot of things this weekend, trying to get a bit more pace. The car has felt mega all weekend, but there have been a few points where we’re scratching our heads about why we’re not quicker.”

He also admitted there is a delicate balance between risk and reward when fighting for pole at a circuit as demanding as Silverstone.

“It’s tough [to improve on the second run], especially when you think it’s a good lap,” Piastri said. “You don’t want to overdo it and go over the limit.

“I think there were a couple of corners where maybe I was a bit safe on the way in and tried to make up for it on the way out, and it didn’t quite work. So yeah, there’s always little fine margins as we know — but ultimately, I’m pretty happy with second on the grid.”

McLaren aims to convert pace into results

As race day looms, McLaren will be searching for every advantage in their quest to take the fight to Red Bull and Ferrari. The British Grand Prix often serves up drama, and with unsettled weather also in the mix, strategic flexibility could prove as vital as outright speed.

For Oscar Piastri, the real challenge will come when the lights go out on Sunday. “All of us have got slightly different strengths,” he reiterated. “The Red Bull is very quick in a straightline. We’ve been just a bit quicker in the high speed. So it’s going to be a fun one.”

With so little separating the top teams, Silverstone is poised for a showdown where every lap could see the lead change hands. And in such a finely balanced contest, the smallest error or the bravest move could be the difference between glory and disappointment.
