Rowland on Formula E title charge: I’m a bit of an underdog, but I like that

The Nissan driver is closing the gap to the other Formula E championship contenders in a title campaign marked by consistency

Nissan driver Oliver Rowland has staked his claim as a surprise favourite to win the 2024 Formula E championship. His season so far has been one of consistency, with four P3 finishes and a race win under his belt.

After two podiums in as many days at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix, Rowland now sits third in the Drivers’ standings, just six points off of second-placed Pascal Wehrlein. Championship leader Nick Cassidy enjoys a more sizeable lead, with 140 points to his name.

Speaking after the second race at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix, Rowland touched upon his championship-winning chances, highlighting the somewhat unforeseen nature of his title campaign. Whilst Jaguar and Porsche being in the fight for the title is to be expected, Rowland has emerged as something of a surprise contender.

“I don’t think I or the team expected really to win the championship,” Rowland told select members of the press, including “But we’re in a good place and for sure, we’d be crazy not to think about it.

“I guess I’m in the hunt, but I would say I’m a bit of an underdog. But I quite like that.”

Although his championship chances are looking strong, Rowland believes that they key to success is to take each race as it comes, without getting too carried away with thoughts of a championship victory.

Issues for Nissan to fix

For now, Nissan and Rowland are focusing their attention on ironing out any remaining issues — namely, qualifying. Despite finishing on the podium during both Berlin races, Rowland had started from P16 on the grid on both occasions, forcing the Brit to fight his way through the pack.

“We can’t keep qualifying on the eighth row and expect to keep getting podiums,” said Rowland. “I know it keeps happening, but if you want to win the championship that can’t happen.

“We need to go away and understand in qualifying how to be better, and it’ll make our lives much easier in the race.”
