A fairy-tale moment for Nico Hulkenberg at the 2025 British Grand Prix saw the Sauber driver climb from 19th to a stunning third place at Silverstone, finally claiming the first F1 podium of his career in his 239th race.

The result lit up the paddock, but what happened after the chequered flag added a whole new layer to the story, with Mercedes delivering a unique and heartfelt gift to their midfield rivals.

As the Sauber garage erupted in celebration, the team was greeted by a delivery from Mercedes: two bottles of champagne and a congratulatory note, “Congratulations on your first podium! Your Mercedes Team.”

It was a gesture that went beyond on-track rivalry, reflecting the respect held for Hulkenberg’s long journey to the rostrum. Even Aston Martin joined the party, adding more champagne to the festivities.

Other drivers were quick to offer their support. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen commented, “Yessss Nicooo. So happy for you,” while Esteban Ocon added, “Mega job mate and very well deserved.”

Such reactions across the grid spoke to just how widely appreciated Hulkenberg’s achievement was, both as a competitor and a popular figure in Formula 1.

Hulkenberg Reflects on a Dream Realised

After years of perseverance and missed chances, Nico Hulkenberg was still letting the enormity of his Silverstone breakthrough sink in.

“I am ecstatic – this is such a special day for the team and for me personally,” Hulkenberg said. “That first podium feeling… I cannot put it into words. It was such an intense race with changing conditions all the time, and you always feel like you are right on the edge.”

Hulkenberg credited the team’s crucial strategic decisions for making the dream possible, especially the late switch to slick tyres which paid off as the track dried.

“We made the right calls today, especially stopping later for slicks,” Hulkenberg went on, “that decision was crucial and made all the difference.

“The battle with Lewis in the final stint was really intense. He was closing the gap, but I managed to keep him behind and even pull away a little as the tyres came in.”

He added: “I think if it had been a dry race, the day would have looked very different for us, but we made the most of the conditions and took every opportunity.

“Starting from last on the grid and finishing on the podium honestly feels kind of surreal. It’s going to take a few days, a few moments, to process everything and take it all in.”

Hulkenberg also made a point to thank his entire Sauber crew, calling it a “great team effort from start to finish.” The 15 points from his podium finish vaulted Sauber to sixth in the constructors’ standings and helped Hulkenberg move up to ninth in the drivers’ championship.

“Now, we have two weeks to enjoy this and celebrate properly before we get back to work – and finish the first half of the season on a high,” Hulkenberg said.

This Silverstone weekend will be remembered not just for Hulkenberg’s long-awaited podium, but also for the show of camaraderie from his competitors—proof that, sometimes, Formula 1 can still deliver moments that bring the sport together
