Nick Cassidy completes ‘crazy’ win with ‘flawless’ performance in Berlin

Jaguar driver Nick Cassidy completed a sensational victory at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix in Round 9 of the Formula E season

Nick Cassidy of Jaguar executed a remarkable recovery drive at the 2024 Berlin E-Prix Round 9, rallying from 21st place mid-race to secure the victory. Starting ninth, Cassidy experienced a significant drop to 21st by Lap 21 in a tightly contested race where battling three abreast for the lead was commonplace.

From a seemingly unlikely position, the New Zealander launched a late charge, capitalising on two periods under Safety Car conditions to conserve energy. His winning manoeuvre unfolded on the Lap 43 when he first overtook Oliver Rowland of Nissan, who had momentarily led after starting 15th, and then proceeded to pass Jean-Eric Vergne of DS Penske.

“That was crazy! I hope you guys liked it. It was tough. It’s great for the team. They were flawless all race with the strategy, the communication,” Cassidy said after the race. “I didn’t have the car to win today but somehow we pulled it off. We have a fantastic group of people. I’m really enjoying this year. These days are pretty special.”

With a slight advantage in usable energy, Cassidy extended his lead to two seconds, eventually winning by four seconds, to claim victory. The race for the remaining podium positions was fierce, with Vergne maintaining second place despite intense pressure from Rowland. Mitch Evans of Jaguar managed a clean race from 10th to finish fourth, trailing the Porsche duo of Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Felix da Costa.

Stoffel Vandoorne of DS Penske, starting second, led at various stages but ultimately finished seventh. He was followed by Edoardo Mortara of Mahindra and Sacha Fenestraz of Nissan. McLaren’s Taylor Barnard marked a notable debut in Formula E by finishing tenth, becoming the youngest point-scorer in the series.

The race saw frequent leadership changes and strategic use of Attack Mode, with early stints led by Vandoorne and Mortara. Notable incidents included a Full Course Yellow followed by a Safety Car period to recover Joel Eriksson‘s car after a crash. The race resumed with frequent changes at the front as drivers juggled for position using Attack Mode.

In a dramatic sequence, Rowland made significant gains, despite sustaining front wing damage. The race was characterised by tight margins and aggressive driving, leading to a puncture for Jake Dennis after contact, costing him a potential top finish.

The final laps were marked by robust battles, setting the stage for Cassidy’s extraordinary comeback and victory. Cassidy now leads the Drivers’ Championship with 121 points, ahead of Wehrlein’s 112. Jaguar also leads the Team Standings with 210 points. The next round is set for 12 May at Tempelhof.
