Raikkonen to make racing return in NASCAR

Former Formula 1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen has announced that he will return to competitive racing in the NASCAR Cup Series

Former F1 world champion Kimi Raikkonen has announced that he will return to racing in the NASCAR Cup Series for a one-off event at Watkins Glen.

Raikkonen who retired from Formula 1 at the end of the 2021 season, has previously dabbled in the NASCAR world taking part in the Nationwide Series (now Xfinity Series) and a single appearance in the Truck Series for Kyle Busch Motorsport during his sabbatical from F1 during 2010 and 2011.

Raikkonen will race for the Trackhouse team, who are currently running an initiative called Project91, where the team are offering their #91 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to international drivers in a bid to boost the sport’s profile.

“I wasn’t looking to race again, but Justin came to my home in Switzerland and convinced me how serious he was about putting together a top-notch program,” Raikkonen said via a Trackhouse press release.

“This will be fun, but it’s something I will take very seriously. I know how competitive the NASCAR Cup Series is and it will be a big challenge.”

Trackhouse team owner Justin Marks was equally enthused about the deal with the American team owner believing that Raikkonen was the perfect person to kickstart the initiative.

“I’m really excited to launch this year with Kimi Raikkonen,” Marks said to the official NASCAR website.

“Obviously, the 2007 F1 World Champion and the most experienced F1 driver in history, he’ll really kind of help set this program off.

“I’m looking forward to it. I’m bullish in our ability to be able to track the global stars of motorsport and do something really special under the Trackhouse brand with PROJECT91.”

Raikkonen will be paired with series regulars Daniel Suarez and Ross Chastain, with the Finn so far committing to just the single round in 2022.
