Rowland pulls off Monaco masterclass to tighten grip on Formula E title race

Nissan driver claims third win of the season in a strategic thriller as Monaco hosts its first double-header weekend

Oliver Rowland delivered a clinical performance to win Round 6 at the 2025 Monaco E-Prix, making it three victories in the first six races of the Formula E season and strengthening his championship lead.

The Nissan driver expertly managed his race around the narrow streets of Monte Carlo, overtaking McLaren’s Taylor Barnard on Lap 13 thanks to a perfectly timed Pit Boost deployment.

Despite briefly losing the lead to Nyck de Vries on Lap 26, Rowland responded immediately by activating his final Attack Mode, retaking the lead a lap later and pulling clear for a controlled two-second victory.

“You never know what to do with the strategy especially with these Pit Boost races – it’s the second race but we kind of had a plan and we stuck to it,” Rowland said after the E-Prix. “It was a bit trickier to pass Taylor [Barnard] to be honest, but we kept calm.

“Even at the end I was pretty worried during that second Attack Mode: I dropped back to fifth and I was behind two Mahindras, and I was like ‘right now we need to get cracking’, but great job by the team and very well executed.”

It marks Rowland’s first win in Monaco and puts him firmly at the top of the Drivers’ World Championship standings with 94 points, 34 clear of nearest rival Pascal Wehrlein, who could only manage sixth.

Mahindra return to the podium, Andretti bounce back

Nyck de Vries secured a long-awaited second-place finish, his first top-three appearance since the 2022 London E-Prix, and the first podium for Mahindra Racing since Mexico City in 2023.

The Dutchman praised his team’s strategy, particularly around ATTACK MODE usage, which helped keep him in the fight for victory.

“It’s been an incredible day for us as a team,” said de Vries. “They executed a great race during the Pit Boost, and chose the right moments… it’s nice to give them this reward because they really deserve it.”

Jake Dennis, driving for Andretti, finished third after a five-second penalty dropped him behind Rowland and de Vries.

Despite the setback, Dennis was pleased with his recovery, especially after using a spare Pit Boost. “The car has been quick all day today… to repay [the team] with a Monaco podium is always special,” Dennis said.

Taylor Barnard, who had started from pole, faded in the second half of the race after being overtaken by Rowland and struggling to regain momentum.

The 2025 Monaco E-Prix marks the first time the Principality is hosting a double-header Formula E weekend, with Round 7 taking place on Sunday.
