‘Michael Schumacher would be happy to see Lewis Hamilton winning with Ferrari’

Giancarlo Fisichella raced for Ferrari in the 2009 and was reserve driver with the team until 2012

Michael Schumacher would be happy if Lewis Hamilton shattered his drivers’ world championships tally at Ferrari, the team he built his legacy at, according to an ex member of the Italian outfit.

Giancarlo Fisichella raced for Ferrari in 2009 and served as their reserve driver until the end of 2012 and he is best known for his stints at Jordan and Renault (2002-2007) during which he managed to win three races as he partnered Fernando Alonso, and he has weighed in on the Hamilton to Ferrari news.

The Mercedes driver, who is tied with Schumacher on seven titles each, will trade Brackley for Maranello in 2025 bringing a 12-year long association with the works team to an end in what was a bombshell announcement in early February.

Many have wondered how he will fare in Italy, especially against a teammate with the reputation of Charles Leclerc, but for Fisichella he thinks the great German would only have good wishes.

“For sure, Michael Schumacher would be happy to see Lewis Hamilton driving for Ferrari next year and winning the championship, why not?” Fisichella said according to OCB.

“He [Schumacher] would just explain that it’s an amazing, fantastic team. It’s a little bit different to the English teams in terms of atmosphere, it’s a bit more like family.

“Straight away, he will feel into the team. That is very important when you move in a new team, feeling like part of the family straight away.”

How is Michael Schumacher doing in 2024?

On December 29, 2013, Schumacher suffered a serious skiing accident whilst off-piste when hit his head on a rock causing a traumatic brain injury, although some reports suggest he was trying to help a fellow skier.

He was wearing a helmet at the time which likely kept him alive despite the serious damage he sustained, according to the doctors who tended to him. He stayed in a medically induced coma for several months to aid in his recovery before being woken up in early 2014.

Details about Schumacher‘s condition and recovery have been closely guarded by his family, and updates on his health have been scarce and his exact medical condition and the extent of his recovery remain private, with his family choosing to respect his privacy and Fisichella wishes him well.

“I know that Schumacher would have made a great team principal,” Fisichella added. “I don’t know his condition because nobody knows about it, but I wish him nothing but the best and hope he can come back soon.”

As of 2024, it’s unclear how he is doing but he has not been seen in public since prior to the accident in 11 years ago. His wife, Corinna, strictly polices access to her husband to protect his privacy.

Yet bits of information have filtered out. In 2016, he was said to be unable to walk according to his lawyer, Felix Damm, whilst in 2019, Jean Todt, his ex-Ferrari boss, said he could watch races on the television but “struggles to communicate” with those around him.

The last update also came from Todt, who added in late December 2023 that Schumacher is “no longer the Michael we knew in Formula 1”, potentially meaning that he sustained significant damage to the frontal lobe of the brain.

This is the part of the brain that handles personality traits, decision-making and motor function and it is the largest part of the brain. It’s located directly behind the forehead. People have been known to change after damaging this portion of the brain.
