McLaren Racing has confirmed that it will exit the Formula E World Championship at the end of the 2024/25 season, bringing an end to its electric racing chapter after just three years. The decision follows a strategic review of the company’s racing portfolio and reflects its shifting priorities across global motorsport.
McLaren entered Formula E in 2022 by acquiring the operations of the former Mercedes-EQ team, inheriting a strong structure and proven track record. Since then, the team has continued to deliver competitive results, with Taylor Barnard notably becoming the youngest polesitter in the championship’s history earlier this season in Jeddah.
McLaren pivots to endurance racing and core programmes
The decision to step away from Formula E comes as McLaren prepares for a return to the top class of the World Endurance Championship in 2027, joining its ongoing efforts in Formula 1 and IndyCar. McLaren Racing will become the only team in the world to compete at the highest level across these three premier series — with eyes firmly fixed on reclaiming motorsport’s Triple Crown.
“We are immensely proud of what we have achieved in Formula E,” said Zak Brown, McLaren Racing CEO. “The series plays an integral part in the overall motorsport landscape, but the time is right to explore other opportunities that more closely align with McLaren Racing’s overall strategic direction — including our 2027 entry into the FIA World Endurance Championship.”

Brown added that McLaren remains committed to finishing the current Formula E season strongly, while supporting the team in its transition to potential new ownership.
“The team has delivered a strong start to the year and we intend to finish the season on a high,” Brown said. “I’d like to thank the team, Formula E, our partners, and our fans for their continued support.”

McLaren Electric Racing eyes future beyond Season 11
Ian James, Team Principal and Managing Director of McLaren Electric Racing, echoed the pride felt throughout the organisation, praising the team’s journey since Season 9 and the foundation they’ve built for future success.
“We have been on an incredible journey so far,” James said. “Although our McLaren Racing chapter comes to an end, we recognise the value and power of Formula E as a World Championship. Work is well underway to explore the best opportunities for the team to continue competing beyond Season 11.”
McLaren’s departure leaves a notable void in the Formula E paddock, but it also highlights the team’s desire to double down on programmes more closely tied to its long-term commercial and competitive goals.
