McLaren extend Formula 1 deal with Mercedes until 2030

McLaren went back to Mercedes engines in 2021 after a disastrous stint with Honda

McLaren will continue to be powered by Mercedes under the new power unit regulations after extending the deal with the German manufacturer until 2030.

McLaren, who head into Sunday’s 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, locked in a battle with Aston Martin for fourth in the constructors’ championship, renewed their deal with Mercedes before Friday’s first practice session.

The deal ensures Mercedes will have at least one engine customer when new engine regulations arrive for 2026 after longtime customer Aston Martin announced before May’s Monaco GP they would partner with Honda for 2026.

“Mercedes-Benz have been a brilliant and reliable partner of the McLaren Formula 1 Team,” told McLaren’s CEO Zak Brown in a McLaren press statement.

“The extension signifies the confidence that our shareholders and the wider team have in their powertrains and the direction we’re taking with them into the new era of regulations ahead.

“We have been successful together, both in the last three seasons and when they previously powered the team, so we look forward to the success to come as we continue our journey to fight consistently at the front of the grid.”

The continuation of a long partnership

McLaren and Mercedes first became partners in 1995 following the end of the Woking-based team’s unsuccessful one-year stint with Peugeot in 1994.

The partnership secured their first podium together at the 1995 Italian GP, with Mika Hakkinen finishing second behind Johnny Herbert with Hakkinen adding to his podium tally with third at the Japanese GP.

In 1997, David Coulthard secured Mercedes’ first win as an engine manufacturer since the 1955 Italian GP with victory in the season-opening Australian GP, ending a four year winless streak for the Woking-based team.

However, it was in 1998 when the relationship became good as Hakkinen used Mercedes’ power to hold off Michael Schumacher to win his first world championship, with the Finn repeating the feat in 1999.

Lewis Hamilton secured his first world championship in a Mercedes-powered McLaren in 2008 after snatching the title on the last lap of the Brazilian GP by passing Timo Glock for fifth.

Honda’s return to F1 in 2015 saw the brief end of McLaren’s relationship with Mercedes before the partnership restarted in 2021.

In the same year, Daniel Ricciardo took McLaren-Mercedes’ first win since 2012 with victory in the Italian GP ahead of Lando Norris.
