Max Verstappen’s growing discontent: Is F1 losing its champion?

As Max Verstappen continues to dominate on track, his increasing frustration with Formula 1’s off-track politics and restrictions raises questions about his future in the sport

Max Verstappen’s passion for racing remains evident, but his tolerance for the surrounding politics of F1 appears to be waning. Despite his continued success on the circuit, recent events suggest that the four-time world champion is grappling with the sport’s evolving landscape.

During the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Verstappen received a five-second penalty for an incident with Oscar Piastri at Turn 1. The Dutch driver, who ultimately finished second, expressed his frustration post-race.

“The problem is that I cannot share my opinion about it because I might get penalised also, so it’s better not to speak about it,” Verstappen explained to the press. “Anything I say or try to say about it might get me in trouble.”

This sentiment reflects a broader dissatisfaction with the FIA’s stringent regulations on driver conduct and speech. Verstappen elaborated further.

“It’s just the world we live in,” Verstappen said. “You can’t share your opinion because it’s not appreciated apparently, or people can’t handle the full truth. Honestly, it’s better if I don’t say too much. It also saves my time because we already have to do so much.

“It’s honestly just how everything is becoming. Everyone is super sensitive about everything. And [with] what we have currently, we cannot be critical anyway. So less talking – even better for me.”

The Toll of Speculation and Scrutiny

Beyond regulatory frustrations, Verstappen is also contending with persistent speculation about his future. Rumours have circulated about potential moves to rival teams or even a sabbatical. Addressing the speculation, Verstappen was visceral in his reponse to such questions.

“I think just focus on commentating; I’ll focus on driving,” Verstappen told Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft. “Then you don’t need to think about any other scenarios. Honestly, a lot of people are talking about it, except me. Like I said before, I just want to focus on my car, work with the people in the team. That’s the only thing that I’m thinking about in Formula 1 at the moment. I’m very relaxed.”

In a more candid discussion with the Dutch media, Verstappen added:“People want to have stuff to write. That’s all I can make from that. And of course, whatever Helmut says… look, I think every driver wants to be in the fastest car of course, that’s pretty normal.

“But that doesn’t mean that you should just run away when things don’t go your way for a bit. They’re still working on solving our problems and we’re not where we want to be, but that’s all you can do.

“You can start screaming and shouting, but that’s not going to help either. I’m just trying to do the best I can and it’s perfectly possible that in 2026 we do have it all sorted out. But you can’t always win everything.”

These comments underscore a growing weariness with the constant scrutiny and the pressures that come with being at the pinnacle of motorsport. While Verstappen remains committed to his craft, the cumulative effect of regulatory constraints and relentless speculation may influence his long-term engagement with Formula 1.

As the season progresses, the focus will not only be on Verstappen’s performance but also on how he navigates the complex interplay of competition, regulation, and personal fulfillment within the sport.
