Max Verstappen strikes back: How Red Bull emerged on top in Austin

Red Bull put all the controversy surrounding their front bib aside to claim pole position for the 2024 United States GP Sprint Race

Max Verstappen got off to a strong start at the 2024 United States Grand Prix, securing pole position for the F1 Sprint Race at the Circuit of the Americas.

This marked a return to form for the Red Bull driver, who had been without a pole position for nearly four months. In Friday’s Sprint Qualifying, Verstappen narrowly edged out Mercedes’ George Russell, putting Red Bull back at the front of the grid for Saturday’s Sprint Race.

Despite entering the weekend with concerns about his championship prospects, Verstappen delivered a standout performance, quelling any doubts and easing the pressure in the final leg of the season.

Red Bull’s Updates Pay Off

Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Dr. Helmut Marko, credited several factors for Verstappen’s pole position success. These included a near-flawless lap from Verstappen, favorable track conditions, and the team’s recent car updates.

After a four-week break, Red Bull introduced new modifications to their RB20, including adjustments to the car’s floor and edge wing. According to Marko, the updates have made a noticeable difference.

“The technical direction of the updates is working well. We’ve made steady progress since Baku, and this final package seems to be the solution,” Marko stated.

Verstappen’s ability to attack the high-speed corners was a key factor in his performance.

“I felt confident in the car from the first lap, and we were quick in the high-speed sections,” Verstappen explained. GPS data confirmed his dominance in the Esses at the beginning of the lap, where he outpaced the competition.

The layout of the Austin track also played into Verstappen’s strengths. Unlike recent races in Baku and Singapore, where Red Bull struggled on tighter street circuits, the Circuit of the Americas provided a more traditional, flowing layout that favoured the Dutch driver’s style.

What About Red Bull’s Long-Run Performance?

While Red Bull has reason to celebrate their qualifying success, both Verstappen and Marko remain cautious about their race performance.

With only one practice session before qualifying, the team lacks sufficient data on how their car will perform over longer stints.

“We don’t have much information on long runs,” Marko admitted.

Verstappen echoed this sentiment, adding, “I’m happy with our pace, but there are a lot of competitive cars around us.”

Mercedes, in particular, proved to be a strong challenger. Lewis Hamilton was on course for pole position early in the final qualifying session before a yellow flag interrupted his lap.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc also showed potential, despite losing time due to a mistake in the first sector. McLaren’s Lando Norris, though dissatisfied with his lap, cannot be discounted either.

Red Bull has reason to remain cautious, as they’ve experienced unpredictable performances in previous races this season.

The RB20 has shown flashes of brilliance but has struggled to consistently perform throughout a full race weekend. It remains to be seen whether the team can maintain their advantage heading into the sprint and main race.

With several top teams in contention, Verstappen’s pole position is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting weekend in Austin.
