Max Verstappen’s secret to amazing 2024 Austrian GP pole

No one could get close to Max Verstappen during Qualifying for the 2024 Austrian GP

Max Verstappen crushed all challengers at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday by taking a commanding pole position for the 2024 Austrian GP but what were the secrets behind the devasting laps by the world champion?

For four laps in a row from Q2 to the end of Q3, the 26-year-old was around half a second faster than the next nearest rival as he threatened to dip into the 1:03s at one of his three “home” races through the 2024 Formula 1 season to lay down a firm statement to anyone with title dreams.

It left onlookers stunned following a nip-and-tuck showing in Sprint Qualifying on Friday when he took pole by less than a tenth of a second from Lando Norris, as that gap grew to a monstrous 0.404 around 24 hours later so what are the secrets behind it?

“The qualifying went really well,” Verstappen told the press, including, after Qualifying. “We tried to adjust the car a little bit after the things that we learnt this morning, I think it worked well.

“Of course, the track is a bit warmer than yesterday so it made it trickier to drive, but the car felt a lot better for me today.

“I could really attack the corners a bit more, every run was on point and it was very enjoyable out there. It has been a while that we have actually been on pole [for a Grand Prix] so it’s great. It’s a great feeling.

“The team has been working really hard to make the car more competitive and I think this is a great statement. Hopefully we can of course also show that tomorrow in the race.”

Verstappen’s scary warning to 2024 Austrian GP grid

For five races in a row, Red Bull have arguably been the second or third quickest car and the Dutchman was in the middle of a run of three races without being the fastest man in qualifying, ever since the 2024 Monaco GP.

But that was a million miles away from the case in Spielberg as the VerstappenRed Bull combination showed how relentless and rapid their car can be on the traditional circuits with flowing corners and fewer bumps.

Esteban Ocon, who was 10th in Q3, was a mega 1.5 seconds away from Verstappen’s time and Oscar Piastri in seventh was still seven tenths off in the sister McLaren, so with a lot of speed in that Red Bull, the secret question now seems to be just how many seconds does Max Verstappen want to win the 2024 Austrian GP by?
