Max Verstappen and a potential Mercedes move is dominating conversation across the Formula 1 paddock as reports that the reigning champion has given his word to Mercedes boss Toto Wolff about a sensational switch for 2026.
With Red Bull’s stranglehold on F1 looking shakier than ever, the prospect of Verstappen in silver is sending shockwaves through the sport, even as both teams try to keep a lid on speculation.
Whispers of Verstappen’s departure have grown louder in recent weeks, with sources suggesting that talks between his camp and Mercedes are no longer hypothetical.
According to Sky Sport Italy, Verstappen has “said yes” to the move following a series of “concrete negotiations” – though Mercedes’ board still needs to rubber-stamp the transfer before anything is signed.
Uncertainty for Mercedes as Wolff Weighs Up Options
This drama arrives at a critical juncture for both Red Bull and Mercedes. Verstappen’s 2025 title defence took a major blow at the Austrian Grand Prix, after he was eliminated in a first-lap incident with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli.
Now, the Dutch star finds himself 61 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, facing the first real challenge to his dominance in years.

All the while, Toto Wolff is weighing his options for the next era. The Mercedes boss has confirmed that conversations with Verstappen’s management have taken place, but says a decision on the 2026 line-up is still pending. “
You need to be respectable towards the stakeholders in all of that process – the organisation, the drivers, everybody. You need to understand the way forward,” Wolff said after the Austrian GP.
“I feel we are in a good space. We’re in June, there are lots of discussions around. I’ve been open with it, transparent. And at a certain stage, in the next couple of months, until the summer break, everything is going to be done.”
If the deal goes through, it would mean a shakeup at Mercedes. George Russell is out of contract at the end of 2025 and, despite strong results, is still waiting for a renewal.
Kimi Antonelli, handpicked to replace Lewis Hamilton, is also in the mix, which means Mercedes has some tough decisions ahead as the summer break approaches.
Red Bull Dismisses Speculation, But Pressure Mounts
Meanwhile, Christian Horner has tried to stamp out the growing firestorm, dismissing rumors as “noise” and reiterating that Verstappen is under contract through 2028.
“We’re very clear with the contract that we have with Max until 2028. So anything is entirely speculative that is said, but we tend not to pay too much attention to it,” Horner told Sky Sports F1.
Still, with Mercedes waiting in the wings and Verstappen reportedly giving his approval, the dynamic at Red Bull feels more fragile than ever. Verstappen’s frustrations have grown amid recent on-track struggles, and the speculation will only increase as the team battles to keep him in red and blue.
If Verstappen does leave, it would be one of the biggest moves in modern F1. The impact on the driver market would be immediate, potentially setting off a chain reaction across several top teams. All eyes are now on the Mercedes board to see if they approve a deal that could reshape the grid for years to come.
