Returning to China for the first time since Season 5, the 2024 Shanghai E-Prix promises to be a thrilling spectacle as the fourth double-header weekend of the season. With the World Championship title battle intensifying. The event not only celebrates the sport’s roots in China but also highlights the country’s leadership in electric vehicle (EV) technology and innovation.

The Shanghai International Circuit, known for its unique layout resembling the Chinese character “上” (shang), meaning ‘superior’, is set to provide a challenging and exhilarating experience. The circuit’s combination of high-speed straights and technical corners, including the famous loop of Turns 1 and 2, will test the skills and strategies of the drivers.

The 3.051km layout for the Formula E race is a shortened version of the traditional Grand Prix circuit, designed to enhance the excitement of the E-Prix format. Investigations pending

Maximilian Gunther, who finished P9, receives a 10 second time penalty for the incident with Mortara, which sees the Maserati driver drop down to P21.

The final results of Round 11 could be set to change further. An incident has been noted between Pascal Wehrlein and Nick Cassidy, setting up the possibility of a Jaguar 1-2 further down the line.

The top 10

It’s a Jaguar 1-3, interrupted by the Porsche of Pascal Wehrlein. After Round 11 of the 2023 Formula E season, Nick Cassidy continues to lead the championship standings, 13 points ahead of rival Pascal Wehrlein.

Further investigations

Da Costa is under investigation a second time, along with DS Penske’s Jean-Eric Vergne. The incident has been noted as “pushing a driver off track”.

Evans and Da Costa under investigation

Already the post-race drama has begun. Both Evans and Da Costa are under investigation from the stewards for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. It’s not clear where this occurred.

Evans WINS!

It’s a victory for Jaguar, as an elated Mitch Evans crosses the line first. Cassidy couldn’t make good on his energy advantage, and comes home in third, behind Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein.

It was a great defensive job from Wehrlein, who fought hard to prevent Cassidy from getting by. Amidst all the drama, Oliver Rowland managed to slip up into P4, relegating Antonio Felix da Costa to P5.

Final lap…

Evans snatches the lead from Wehrlein, whilst Cassidy remains down in third. Cassidy attempts a move around the outside of Wehrlein, but can’t get past the Porsche driver. He’s got the energy advantage, but it doesn’t look like Cassidy has the time left in the race to use it.

Lap 27/29: Advantage, Cassidy

The Jaguar driver has two percent more energy than Wehrlein, who finds himself on the back foot compared to the Jaguar drivers.

Jaguar tells Cassidy to continue to hold position, biding his time whilst Evans and Wehrlein battle it out for first.

Lap 26/29: Tight fight

Pascal Wehrlein cuts across the grass, snatching the race lead as we head into Lap 26. He’s back in the front, with Evans and Cassidy running directly behind him. Da Costa has re-taken P4, and needs to get ahead of Cassidy to help protect Wehrlein’s lead.

Lap 25/29: Jaguar close in

Cassidy manages to get past Dennis, despite the Andretti driver’s best efforts. He closes in on the lead, suggesting a possible Jaguar 1-2.

Lap 24/29: The battle heats up

It’s tight between the top five, as the battle for first heats up. The top five are as follows:

  4. Cassidy
  5. Da Costa

Lap 23/29: A rough race for McLaren

After starting in the top five, McLaren’s Jake Hughes has slipped down the running order to P18. His teammate Sam Bird, who makes his first return to racing since his wrist injury in Monaco, runs ahead of him in P15. It looks like it’ll be a points-less finish for McLaren.

Lap 21/29: Cassidy on the move

Once down in P13, Nick Cassidy has now fought his way up to P5, just three places back from his teammate Mitch Evans.

Cassidy is looking good on the energy front. With Porsche having lead so much of the race, they’re a couple of percent down on the Jaguars. This bodes well for Cassidy, who could easily launch an attack in the final laps of the race.

Lap 19/29: Yellow flag

Debris on track sees yellow flags wave. Up at the front, Porsche are coming under pressure from Mitch Evans. The Kiwi is all over the back of race leader Pascal Wehrlein, having got past Da Costa.

Da Costa won’t stand for it though. As we go back to green flag racing, Da Costa swiftly dispenses of Evans, re-taking P2. But Evans isn’t so quick to let that go. The Jaguar drives snatches second place back from the Portuguese driver.

Lap 17/29: DNF for Mortara

Edoardo Mortara is down in the pits, and with that his race comes to an end. On-track action saw the Mahindra driver pick up damage at Turn 6, shedding the end plate of the right side of his front wing.

Lap 16/29: Past the halfway point

We’re just over half way. Here’s the current top 10:

Lap 13/29: Tension brewing

Things seem tense in Jaguar’s garage. Nick Cassidy, down in P9, sounds frustrated with his team over the radio. For reference, his teammate Mitch Evans is currently leading the race…

Lap 11/29: Who wants to lead?

Not Mahindra! Nyck de Vries is out at the front, but receives a message over the radio from his race engineer who flat-out tells him that they “do not want the lead”.

De Vries falls back, and Wehrlein returns to the front.

Lap 10/29: Playing the long game

This race has been a bit of a slow burner so far as the grid looks to bide their time in an effort to reserve energy. The running order has swapped round plenty of times, but it’s still far too soon to tell who might win.

Lap 9/29: Vergne returns

Evans’ time at the front is fleeting. As the front of the pack goes three-wide, Vergne takes the race lead. Evans slips back, with Wehrlein taking up P2.

Lap 8/29: Evans makes gains

Mitch Evans has been all over the back of the Porsches, eyeing up the front spot. As we head into Lap 8, Evans swoops ahead of Wehrlein and snatches up the race lead.

Lap 6/29: Good odds for Wehrlein

Porsche’s strategy here seems a good omen for Wehrlein’s championship chances. Whilst Da Costa and Wehrlein swap the race lead between them, championship leader Nick Cassidy is stuck down in P14.

Lap 5/29: Porsche leads

With Wehrlein’s first Attack Mode period over, Da Costa opts for his. Wehrlein leads again, with Da Costa following in P2.

Porsche look strong here, having possibly taken a leaf out of Jaguar’s book after the British team’s incredible team strategy at the 2023 Monaco E-Prix.

Lap 3/29: The first Attack Mode

Around half of the grid opt for their first Attack Mode on Lap 3. Wehrlein takes his Attack Mode allowance, whilst Da Costa does not.

But it’s Robin Frijns who benefits here, the Envision driver inheriting the lead from Wehrlein, having wormed his way up to the front of the pack from P9.

Lap 2/29: What’s Porsche’s plan?

A superb start from Antonio Felix da Costa sees the Porsche driver jump up to P3 from P6. He’s running right behind teammate Pascal Wehrlein, putting Porsche in a strong position to play the team game.

Nick Cassidy has slipped down to P13, whilst defending World Champion Jake Dennis enjoyed a strong start, climbing up to P10.

Lap 1/29: Lights out!

It’s a slow getaway from pole sitter Jean Eric Vergne, but an even worse start from Oliver Rowland, who immediately drops down to fourth.

Vergne holds onto his lead, but Pascal Wehrlein is immediately all over the back of Vergne right off the line.

Five minutes to go…

There’s not long left till lights out and the drivers are out on the grid, readying themselves for the race start.

Speaking to Formula E, ERT’s Dan Ticktum says he anticipates “quite a severe peloton” today, particularly at Saturday’s race is set to be longer than the race on Sunday.

Where will the winner come from?

The Shanghai E-Prix is anticipated to be another peloton style race, with energy saving absolutely key to a successful run around the Shanghai International Circuit.

Leading the race will be a burden for the first half of the race as the drivers look to conserve their energy. But as the race goes on and the chequered flag grows nearer, we can expect a frantic battle for the lead.

With this style of racing, the winner of today’s E-Prix could come from anywhere — not just the front row. Current championship leader Nick Cassidy will be fighting to work his way to front as he starts from P10. However his championship rival, Pascal Wherein, starts this race on better footing, having qualified P4.

The starting grid

After a tight battle in qualifying, it’s Jean-Eric Vergne who starts Round 11 of the Shanghai E-Prix on pole. It marks the DS Penske driver’s 16th pole in Formula E, equalling the record held by Envision’s Sebastien Buemi. Vergne starts ahead of Oliver Rowland, having beat the Nissan driver to pole position by just 0.038s.

What time does 2024 Shanghai E-Prix start?

The 2024 Shanghai E-Prix will see Round 11 begin at 15:00 local time in China, which is 08:00 BST in the UK and 03:00 ET for those on the US East Coast, or 00:00 PT for fans on the US West Coast.
