Red Bull Ring sees Russell return to winning form
George Russell claims his second win of the 2026 Formula 1 season with a commanding drive that saw him do just enough at the front of the field to manage the race to the finish line.
The result looks a little lairy for the Mercedes man on paper with Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli just behind, but make no mistake: He was never credibly challenged in Austria on Sunday.
He now enjoys a return to winning ways after a tough winless run since the opener in Australia, and he can now get his title charge back in motion.
Verstappen back on the podium in Styria
Max Verstappen climbing the steps to participate in the podium ceremony is nothing unexpected at the Red Bull Ring, which is one of his best tracks.
Having won here five times in the past, the Dutchman narrowly missed out on making it win No. 6 but came up just short to George Russell and Mercedes.
So what does he make of his day in the mountains in the heart of Europe as he finishes seocnd at the Austrian GP?
Antonelli comes home third in Austria
Kimi Antonelli looked to be all over the place in the opening laps of the Austrian Grand Prix as he ran off the circuit three times in two laps for Mercedes!
But from there on, he settled into his routine and managed to ultimately secure a good result as he fought his way back to third-place. What does he make of it?
“I was a bit too excited on the first few laps! Definitely didn’t drive well,” Antonelli said to F1 TV. “I did too many mistakes and on the first stint on the medium, I lost three or four seconds with the mistakes.
“I was struggling with the brakes. After I changed tyres, I reset and the pace at the end was very strong. It was a shame I joined the party a bit too late.
“On my side, there’s a lot to improve, but still… minimise the mistakes.”
Results: How they finished in Austria
George Russell manages to fend off Max Verstappen and wins for Mercedes to breathe life back into his championship goals with Kimi Antonelli in third.
A difficult day for Ferrari saw them slip from the front down the order, and McLaren managed to limit the damage on a challenging weekend.

Chequered Flag: Russell wins Austrian Grand Prix as Verstappen hangs on!
Max Verstappen manages to hold off the last-lap effort by Kimi Antonelli, who had just got into Overtake Mode and needed an extra lap to beat the Red Bull!
And Verstappen may be feeling he only needed a couple more laps to beat George Russell, who wins the Austrian Grand Prix by just 1.6 seconds for his second win of the season!
A composed drive by Russell sees him nail all of the essentials needed to win in Formula 1 and he manages to take the chequered flag before anyone else!
The gap in the standings between the two Silver Arrows falls by 10 points, and will that give Russell the momentum and boost he needs to go on a winning run?
Lap 69/71: Antonelli almost has Overtake Mode!
We could be set to get Max Verstappen versus Kimi Antonelli on the final lap of this Austrian Grand Prix as the Mercedes closes in on the Red Bull!
He has Overtake Mode if he can hang on through Sector 2.
Can the Italian snatch second place away?
Lap 66/71: Gap to Russell momentarily drops
The gap to George Russell falls by half-a-second to three seconds as the Mercedes makes his way through traffic, but then opens up once again once he is back into free air.
Russell has P1 covered off right now but the same cannot be said for Max Verstappen’s position in the Red Bull, who is just ahead of Kimi Antonelli.
The second Mercedes car is 1.9 seconds behind! Can he catch him?
Lap 63/71: Has Russell shrugged Verstappen off?
The gap to Max Verstappen behind is now five seconds for George Russell in the closing stages of this Austrian Grand Prix.
He looks as though he may have done enough to claim this victory ahead of the Red Bull at the Red Bull Ring – unless he hits the cliff.
If his tyres drop off then it will be very exciting, and Kimi Antonelli is chipping away at Verstappen too. The Italian is 3.5 behind.
Lap 60/71: Leclerc pits for the final time
Charles Leclerc now wants to get off those hard tyres as the Ferrari simply has no pace on the compound today in this Austrian Grand Prix.
He has just been passed by Lando Norris, who himself hasn’t been fast, to drive home just how slow the Ferrari is at the moment.
Leclerc is back into the race in eighth and he’s on the soft tyres.
A safety car will be a big benefit right now.
Lap 57/71: Is rain on the way to the Red Bull Ring?
Sky Sports F1’s Bernie Collins has just reported that there is a cell of rain only 10 miles away from the Red Bull Ring, to add another potential spanner to the works.
With the grid mostly on worn hard tyres, that will add a lot of risk at the end of the race for the likes of George Russell, Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli to contend with.
Here is your order into the final set of laps:
| Pos | Driver | Team | Gap | Pit Stops |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | George Russell | Mercedes | Leader | 2 |
| 2 | Max Verstappen | Red Bull Racing | +6.239 | 2 |
| 3 | Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | +10.871 | 2 |
| 4 | Oscar Piastri | McLaren | +16.154 | 2 |
| 5 | Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | +19.725 | 3 |
| 6 | Isack Hadjar | Red Bull | +24.186 | 2 |
| 7 | Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | +26.816 | 2 |

Lap 53/71: Brief VSC in the Austrian GP
There is a very brief virtual safety car deployed as the Williams of Alex Albon hits a bollard at the apex of Turn 3 in the Red Bull Ring.
Nobody has the chance to dive into the pits save for Pierre Gasly’s alpine, who is running 13th in the Austrian GP now.
Lando Norris has been noted for a pit lane infringement as he overtook a retiring Lance Stroll on his own way into the pits.
The Aston Martin was going very slowly even at those reduced speeds, but overtaking there is strictly banned for safety.
Lap 52/71: Antonelli into the pits!
Kimi Antonelli is now into the pit lane for Mercedes and he hands over the lead of the Austrian GP to his teammate George Russell in the process.
The Italian and our championship leader comes back into the race in third place and he is 5.1 seconds behind Max Verstappen.
Can he win the race?
Lap 49/71: Verstappen pits!
Max Verstappen pits from the lead of the Austrian Grand Prix just as Kimi Antonelli had found himself within Overtake Mode of the Red Bull star!
The gap had dropped to 0.9 seconds and an overtake was looking more of a formality than a prospect, so Verstappen gets out of the way for new tyres.
He’s in third place and 11 seconds behind George Russell, who he will now have to chase down.
Antonelli has been told to push by his engineer…
Lap 47/71: Antonelli working himself into contention
If Max Verstappen can win this Austrian Grand Prix then so can Kimi Antonelli as the Mercedes has now closed to within 2.6 seconds of the Red Bull ahead.
The Italian has been fast all year on this compound and he’s now closing in on a four-time Formula 1 world champion with a view to taking the lead of the race.
Can he still beat George Russell this weekend?
Lap 43/71: Russell pits from the lead!
George Russell now comes into the pits for Mercedes and surrenders the lead of the Austrian Grand Prix to Max Verstappen and his Red Bull!
The Dutchman is 4.8 seconds ahead of Kimi Antonelli in the other Silver Arrows car, and Russell heads back into the race in third place.
He is 12.6 seconds back.
Lap 42/71: Hamilton and Piastri pit!
Lewis Hamilton completes his three-stopper at the Red Bull Ring and Oscar Piastri, who he was chasing down, also comes into the pit lane!
Ferrari gain a tenth over McLaren there as they take the hard tyres and rejoin into sixth and seventh, with Charles Leclerc moving through.
Mercedes are getting ready to stop too!
Lap 39/71: Verstappen closing in on Russell
Max Verstappen is taking time out of George Russell hand over fist, especially as the Mercedes driver just made a mistake and lost around a second of lap time!
Is he set to win his first race of the year? He will have to make an overtake to do it!
But the Red Bull is now 1.5 back and looks very comfortable at the moment.
Lap 37/71: Leclerc loses two places in four corners!
Charles Leclerc is only going backwards at the Red Bull Ring as his hard tyre struggle for performance on the Ferrari, with Oscar Piastri and Lewis Hamilton getting through!
Piastri makes his move into Turn 3 whilst Hamilton then follows through at Turn 6 to set about chasing down the McLaren as he looks to get back to the podium places.
Leclerc pits for new wheels and comes back out into eighth place!
Lap 32/71: Your order so far at the Red Bull Ring
Max Verstappen is chasing George Russell down at the Red Bull Ring and he could be extremely fast in the final part of this Austrian GP today!
He still has the medium tyre available if he opts for the two-stopper, and that is the tyre to be on today with the hard not looking particularly fast!
Here is your order so far:
| Pos | Driver | Team | Gap | Pit Stops |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | George Russell | Mercedes | Leader | 1 |
| 2 | Max Verstappen | Red Bull | +3.884 | 1 |
| 3 | Kimi Antonelli | Mercedes | +13.025 | 1 |
| 4 | Charles Leclerc | Ferrari | +15.647 | 1 |
| 5 | Oscar Piastri | McLaren | +16.974 | 1 |
| 6 | Lewis Hamilton | Ferrari | +18.787 | 2 |
| 7 | Isack Hadjar | Red Bull | +20.717 | 1 |
| 8 | Lando Norris | McLaren | +25.289 | 1 |
| 9 | Arvid Lindblad | Racing Bulls | +40.473 | 1 |
| 10 | Liam Lawson | Racing Bulls | +41.448 | 1 |

Lap 30/71: Gains and losses for Ferrari
Lewis Hamilton manages to go around the outside of Isack Hadjar at Turn 6 to claim sixth-place for Ferrari in this Austrian Grand Prix today.
But at the same time Charles Leclerc’s defence of third place comes to an end as Kimi Antonelli breezes through at Turn 4 for Mercedes.
Leclerc is ahead of Hamilton, but on alternate strategies will there be team orders when the Brit catches up?
Lap 28/71: Green Flag – We are racing again!
Carlos Sainz’s stranded Williams has now been moved out of the way and this Austrian Grand Prix is back to green flag running at the Red Bull Ring!
George Russell leads Max Verstappen with Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli in third, whilst Oscar Piastri has got his McLaren up intto fifth so far.
This has been a hectic race so far in the heart of Europe!
Lap 26/71: Hamilton pits under the VSC
Lewis Hamilton now stops under the virtual safety car and takes a used set of soft tyres to re-join the race in ninth place behind Isack Hadjar’s Red Bull!
The pit lane has just closed so if this VSC becomes a full safety car for whatever unlikely reason, Hamilton will be a massive winner for Ferrari!
The Scuderia continue with bold strategies in Europe.
Lap 25/71: Sainz OUT of Austrian GP as Antonelli pits
Kimi Antonelli comes into the pits under yellow flags and he just misses out on a golden chance to take the lead of the Austrian Grand Prix!
Carlos Sainz has retired on the start-finish straight and he is out of this race for Williams with a mechanical issue at the Red Bull Ring!
The Mercedes stops for hard tyres and comes back out into this race in fourth as the virtual safety car is deployed!
He’s now behind Charles Leclerc but he could have been in the lead!
Lap 22/71: Max Verstappen passes Lewis Hamilton!
Lewis Hamilton looks to be really struggling on his hard tyres at the moment and he has already dropped a second behind Max Verstappen as the Red Bull gets through at Turn 6!
The Dutchman made the first move into Turn 3 only for the Ferrari to come back at Turn 4 in a repeat of the earlier part of the race, but this time Verstappen gets past for good at Turn 6.
He goes down the inside and runs his old rival wide, just moments after the FIA declared no further investigation for their tangle earlier on today.
Lap 18/71: Russell into the pits!
George Russell now comes into the pit lane to pick the hard tyre, which he feels he can try to turn into a one-stop race! That’s even more ambitious than a three-stopper!
Russell emerges from the pits for Mercedes in third and he is ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by around three seconds.
McLaren are leaving Lando Norris out as Kimi Antonelli takes over the lead.
Lap 17/71: Max Verstappen pits!
Max Verstappen now pits for Red Bull after extending his stint over the two Ferrari cars and he gets a 2.4-second stop in this Austrian Grand Prix!
Verstappen comes back into the race on the hard tyre and is a handful of seconds behind Lewis Hamilton, so there is a good chance he can overtake!
Will Mercedes react with George Russell now?
Lap 14/71: Leclerc pits for Ferrari
Charles Leclerc now comes into the pits for Ferrari and puts himself onto the same strategy as Lewis Hamilton, indicating a plan rather than a reaction by Maranello!
Leclerc is on the hard tyre and comes out into this Austrian Grand Prix in 11th place, he was racing Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes ahead of that pit stop.
Can this bold three-stop approach to strategy work twice in a row?
Lap 13/71: Hamilton pits, Verstappen into 2nd
Lewis Hamilton comes into the pits for the hard tyre and unleashes Max Verstappen into second place as the Red Bull ace looks to hunt down George Russell at the Red Bull Ring.
Ferrari are going aggressive on the strategy once again! It worked in Barcelona, will it work in Austria?
Hamilton joins back in ninth.
Lap 11/71: Hamilton and Verstappen spark fireworks!
Lewis Hamilton gets a poor run out of the final corner and sets Max Verstappen on his gearbox at the Austrian GP as the Dutchman looks for a move at Turn 3!
He goes down the inside and runs the Ferrari to the edge of the track but the seven-time world champion comes back at him and gets ahead into Turn 4!
Verstappen looks to fight back at Turn 6 but is then run wide and dips into the gravel, claiming that should be a penalty for Hamilton.
Lap 9/71: Perez OUT of Austrian GP
Sergio Perez is out of the Austrian GP as the second Cadillac comes into the pits with a mechanical issue – a dreadful weekend for the team ends on Lap 9.
The team has simply been unable to handle the hot temperatures, and the 11th team on the grid is now out of the action.
They’ll go again at the British GP.
Lap 8/71: Mistake by Hamilton!
Lewis Hamilton is struggling with the rear of his Ferrari in Austria and he has made a mistake somewhere around this Red Bull Ring, allowing Max Verstappen to close in!
The Dutchman behind is just half-a-second back whilst George Russell is now 2.7 seconds clear in Styria, can Hamilton hold on to second place?
Kimi Antonelli in fourth is 3.4 seconds behind the pair – he got past Charles Leclerc at Turn 9 the last time around!
Lap 6/71: Hamilton hanging on to Russell
George Russell leads the Austrian Grand Prix but currently he isn’t breaking away from Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari, who is just outside of Overtake Mode.
Is there a bit of cat-and-mouse going on between the former teammates right now as they look to manage their engine temperatures, tyres and brakes in this heat?
Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, is still trying to hold off Kimi Antonelli in the other Ferrari and Mercedes!
Watch the start below:
Lap 3/71: Verstappen up to third as Bottas DNFs
Max Verstappen gets past Chalres Leclerc to take third place at the Red Bull Ring to the delight of his fans in the grand stands in the European mountains!
Leclerc is struggling at the start of this race, but not as much as Valtteri Bottas, who says his front-right brake is on fire and he comes into the pit lane to DNF from this Austrian Grand Prix.
A rough weekend for the Finn has now concluded and Sergio Perez is the sole Cadillac left.
LIGHTS OUT: Hamilton passes Leclerc!
Lewis Hamilton goes around the outside of Charles Leclerc at Turn 4 to take second place away from his Ferrari teammate as George Russell leads the Austrian Grand Prix!
Meanwhile Kimi Antonelli runs wide at Turn 1 and Turn 3, will Max Verstappen be complaining about that on the radio? The Mercedes has kept position by leaving the track!
Russell, Hamilton, Leclerc, Antonelli and Verstappen form the Top 5!

It’s almost time to go for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix and Total-Motorsport.com will bring you all of the updates and action as it unfolds at the Red Bull Ring!
It’s George Russell on pole position for Mercedes ahead of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton for Ferrari, but will he make it to Turn 3 in the lead of the race?
And what can Max Verstappen do from fifth on the grid after his crash in qualifying?
Russell on pole after chaotic Qualifying
The fight for pole had looked open throughout Saturday, but Mercedes carried their practice form into Qualifying. Antonelli topped both Friday sessions and Russell led FP3, giving the Silver Arrows a clean sweep of practice before the grid-setting session began.
The final moments of Q3 then turned the session on its head. Verstappen lost control at Turn 9 and crashed out, bringing out yellow flags while others were still on fast laps. Russell completed his lap and went fastest, while Antonelli backed off after reading the situation as more serious than it was.
That leaves Mercedes in a strong but delicate position. Russell has track position, but Antonelli starts fourth and has shown excellent race pace across the weekend, particularly in Friday’s long runs.

Ferrari ready to attack from the front
Ferrari will start with both cars inside the top three, giving Leclerc and Hamilton a major chance to put pressure on Russell early.
Leclerc starts second after a sharp Qualifying performance, while Hamilton lines up third as he continues to build momentum after his Barcelona GP victory. The seven time world champion has looked increasingly settled in Ferrari colours, and Austria gives him another chance to turn strong qualifying pace into a victory fight.
The run to Turn 1 is short, but the climb to Turn 3 can create early opportunities. If Russell does not make a clean start, Leclerc and Hamilton will be close enough to attack, especially with the Red Bull Ring offering several DRS-assisted chances across the lap.
Long-run pace points to strategic race
The practice picture suggests the Austrian Grand Prix may not simply be decided by qualifying order. Antonelli looked particularly strong over longer stints on Friday, while Mercedes appeared to have one of the most complete race packages at the Red Bull Ring.
McLaren also showed encouraging long-run speed, with Piastri and Norris both close enough to the front to become factors if strategy opens the race up. Their challenge is track position, with both drivers starting behind Verstappen and needing either strong pace, smart pit timing or a Safety Car to move into podium contention.
Tyre degradation is expected to matter. Pirelli have brought the C3, C4 and C5 compounds to Austria, meaning teams have the Hard, Medium and Soft available for a race where two stops could become the most competitive route if temperatures and degradation remain high.
The Medium and Hard are likely to be central to most race plans, but the Soft could still be tempting at the start for drivers who want immediate grip. The trade-off will be stint length, especially around a circuit where heavy braking and traction zones can punish the rear tyres.

Verstappen chasing recovery at Red Bull’s home race
Verstappen starts fifth after his Q3 crash, leaving him with work to do at Red Bull Racing’s home Grand Prix. The Dutchman has enjoyed some of the biggest moments of his career at the Red Bull Ring, but this weekend has not been straightforward.
He was close to the front in practice without topping a session, then ended Qualifying in the barriers at Turn 9. That makes the race a test of both pace and recovery, with Verstappen needing to pass at least one Mercedes and two Ferrari cars to fight for victory.
Isack Hadjar also has a chance to score important points for Red Bull Racing, but the main focus will be whether Verstappen can turn a difficult Saturday into a competitive Sunday.
What to watch in the Austrian Grand Prix
The Red Bull Ring is only 4.326km long, but it can produce dramatic racing. The lap is fast, the DRS zones are powerful and the heavy braking areas into Turns 1, 3 and 4 give drivers genuine chances to attack. Key themes to watch include:
- Russell’s launch from pole position
- Leclerc and Hamilton attacking for Ferrari
- Antonelli’s race pace after strong long runs
- Verstappen’s recovery from fifth
- Norris and Piastri’s strategy options for McLaren
- Whether the race becomes a two-stop contest
- Soft tyre starters trying to gain early track position
- Medium and Hard tyre degradation
- Undercut power in the first pit window
- Track limits through the final sector
- Safety Car or Virtual Safety Car timing
With Russell on pole, Ferrari stacked directly behind him, Antonelli carrying strong long-run pace and Verstappen fighting from fifth at Red Bull Racing’s home race, the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix has all the ingredients for a tense strategic battle.
