Lewis Hamilton’s scathing review of ‘disastrous’ Mercedes Sprint Qualifying

Hamilton couldn't put a lap together and will start the 2024 Austrian GP Sprint Race from sixth, behind his teammate once again.

George Russell seemed relatively comfortable at the Red Bull Ring by seeming to hit the limit of what his Mercedes could offer, but the same can’t be said for Lewis Hamilton as the seven-time world champion described his messy 2024 Austrian GP Sprint Qualifying as “disastrous” in a harsh review of himself.

The 39-year-old impressed through Free Practice 1 on Friday by regularly appearing to be towards the top of the timing boards despite running no soft tyres throughout the session, but when it came to qualifying his composure and performance deserted him.

As a result, he will line up for the 2024 Austrian GP Sprint Race on June 29 from sixth, behind Carlos Sainz and George Russell, although the statistically most successful driver ever is already looking beyond to the rest of the weekend.

“I wasn’t in the mix at all,” Hamilton told F1 TV after Sprint Qualifying. “The whole session was pretty disastrous.

“We’re gonna say practice was practice felt good the car generally felt good. I don’t think we had the pace obviously to be on pole but yeah, very bad.”

When asked about his chances on Saturday, Hamilton added: “Who knows. I don’t think overtaking is mega here, but we’ll give it our best. Usually, it’s not such an eventful race so I think the focus will be mostly on getting better qualified tomorrow.

Hamilton’s scruffy Sprint Qualifying mistakes

Despite 104 poles to his name, the veteran made a mistake on the very first run of the day by going wide at Turn 1 and Turn 6, narrowly edging through into SQ2 by under a tenth of a second from Daniel Ricciardo’s RB.

Then on his final and only run of the final session, he made a mistake at Turn 3 to lose a few tenths in comparison to his teammate before finishing a distant six tenths behind Max Verstappen’s Sprint Pole time.

Hamilton’s disastrous Sprint Qualifying means he will line up behind Verstappen, Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri, George Russell and Carlos Sainz in Spielberg.
