Lewis Hamilton full of praise for Lando Norris after 2024 Miami GP win

Lando Norris won the 2024 Miami GP ahead of Max Verstappen, whilst Lewis Hamilton finished sixth

Despite finishing sixth at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton appears to be the happiest he’s been all season as a strong race for Mercedes, coupled with a McLaren race win, left him full of joy as Lando Norris beat Max Verstappen.

Norris, who came into the race with 109 failed attempts to take his first maiden win, was quietly hopeful at the prospect of emerging victorious from fifth on the grid but even he didn’t envisage it playing out just as it did.

An uninspiring start saw the Brit stuck in a DRS train behind Sergio Perez whilst Oscar Piastri hung onto Verstappen meaning it was looking like the second time he was going to be outshone by an Australian teammate when McLaren had the pace, but that all went out of the window when a safety car was deployed on Lap 28.

Kevin Magnussen had hit Logan Sargeant into the wall and that allowed Norris, who had gone long to gamble on this exact probability, to pit and keep the lead of the race ahead of Verstappen. From there, he executed the restart perfectly, pushed to build a gap and then slowly extended until the flag as he had the whole thing under control.

After crossing the line for his first ever win and getting out of his triumphant car, the Brit was congratulated by Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz and countless others and now Hamilton has expressed his delight as Norris realises one of his childhood dreams.

“I want to say, I feel so really happy for the Lando,” Hamilton told Sky Sports F1 after the race. “I just told him he needs to stay [in Miami] tonight. So, he’s going to try and change, he’s just won a race!

“It’s such a special moment to win your first Grand Prix, and obviously I started at McLaren so really happy to see them back at the top. It’s been a long time.”

Hamilton happy with Mercedes’ pace

Mercedes have struggled throughout the season to discover just exactly how fast their car is as the team appears to encounter a new problem every week, be it cooling, extreme set-up changes or narrow operating windows.

But at the Miami International Autodrome, Hamilton felt like he had the car under control for the first time in a long time as he scythed through the field at the start of the race before hanging onto Sergio Perez’s gearbox after the restart, despite him possessing the much faster Red Bull.

The 103-time race winner lacked the extra bit of top speed needed to successfully make a move in the DRS zones but the fact that he could keep pace with a Red Bull for 25 laps, even if it wasn’t the quicker one, was something he has taken as encouragement.

“Honestly really good,” Hamilton said when asked how his race felt. “I’m pretty happy with the job by the team. Pretty happy with the set-up, we finally got that front sorted, or at least in a better window, and were able to move forwards.

“We had some good battles with a few drivers. There was one that was close when he turned in [Nico Hulkenberg]. What was crazy is that I just felt the most calm in that moment, I don’t know why.

“And then to hold onto the Red Bulls, or at least one of the Red Bulls, and it felt great to like see the Ferrari and the Red Bull like within distance but yeah, really tough.”
