Lewis Hamilton hits out at speculation over Ferrari move: ‘People continue to talk sh*t’

Lewis Hamilton shocked the F1 world when he announced his switch from Mercedes to Ferrari for 2025

Lewis Hamilton hit back when asked if Ferrari and Mercedes‘ contrasting early-season vindicates him for jumping ship to Maranello for 2025, insisting he doesn’t need to prove himself to anyone.

Ferrari have scored almost four times Mercedes‘ points tally after four races in 2024 including a win for Carlos Sainz, who also took victory last year while Hamilton’s latest trip to the top step of the podium came in 2021.

Their drivers sit third and fourth in the championship despite Sainz missing a race due to appendicitis, while Mercedes‘ pair sit seventh and ninth led by George Russell and the Scuderia have had the decisive edge in qualifying too.

Despite Hamilton‘s struggles – having scored just 10 points so far – it’s partially good news as he gets a preview of what’s to come but he insisted he’s not analysing that decision to leave Mercedes and is still focussed on 2024.

“I don’t feel like I need my decision vindicating,” Hamilton told select members of the press, including Total-Motorsport.com. “I know what’s right for me and that hasn’t changed since the moment I made the decision, there’s not been a moment I’ve questioned it.

“I’m not swayed by other people’s comments, even today there’s people continuing to talk s**t, it will continue for the rest of the year and I’ll have to just do what I did the previous time, only you know what’s right for you and this will be an exciting time for me.”

Russell hoping the gap to the top can close

Hamilton, originally Alonso‘s arch-rival in his debut season at McLaren as the then-double-reigning champion’s teammate, added that he hopes he can continue on the grid alongside his now friend for many years to come.

George Russell was only nine in that season, but 2024 marks his fourth campaign competing against Alonso and he was asked whether he believes the Spaniard deserves more victories in F1.

“I think there’s many drivers who deserve to win more grand prixes and there’s many drivers who deserve to be fighting for championships,” Russell said.

Lewis was dominating and Max was fighting for a victory here and there and now it’s completely the opposite. It’s not that Max has suddenly turned into a great driver overnight and Lewis has lost it, it’s just because of the way the sport and the regulations have fallen out.

Fernando‘s one of the best drivers on the grid and deserves to be fighting the same way as Charles, Lando, Lewis, Max as well, we all deserve to be fighting for a championship and for victories and that’s ideally where you want the sport to get to, so he doesn’t deserve it any more or less than the drivers I mentioned.”
