Lewis Hamilton confident Mercedes will be faster at Silverstone

The British driver is looking forward to his home event with a faster car than 2023

Lewis Hamilton has confidence that his Mercedes car will be more competitive at Silverstone this season than it was in 2023, as the team have slowly clawed their way into contention on the Formula 1 grid with a series of upgrades.

After a very poor 2023 F1 season overall, Mercedes actually managed to finish third and fifth at the British Grand Prix last year, but the seven-time world champion thinks the recent upgrades to the car will lead to a much more positive weekend at Silverstone this time round.

“It’s hard to say. I think the car will definitely feel a lot better there this year with the direction the car is migrating to, it’s got better characteristics through the range,” Hamilton told the press, including Total-Motorsport.com.

“I don’t know where we were last year. I can’t I can’t imagine we were competitive last year. I think we will definitely be more competitive, so hopefully closer to the front.”

George Russell was the major beneficiary of Mercedes’ new upgrades at the Canadian GP with the Briton managing to secure pole position, before eventually ending the race in third. Hamilton secured fourth.

Russell also made sure he was in the right place to take advantage of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen coming together in Austria to snatch victory at the Red Bull Ring.

Hamilton supportive of Silverstone, with one warning

The majority of the watching fans at Silverstone in early July will be there to see Hamilton, Norris and Russell in action, and will be doing so for a few more years yet.

Silverstone will be staying on the F1 calendar for the foreseeable future as the circuit signed a new 10-year deal with F1 in February, and Hamilton was asked what he wants to see from the organisers to help improve the event.

“I think they put on already an amazing.., it’s an incredible event, if you take it from a bird’s eye view, the whole event is great and all the space is used up, so many fans come and have a great weekend,” Hamilton said.

“The only thing I would ever say is that we have to watch ticket prices. I think they’re continuing to rise, and with the cost of living nowadays, I think it’s too high.

“And of course the sport wouldn’t like me saying that, but I’m just thinking from a perspective of a of a fan that would come with a family.”
