Hamilton outsmarts Verstappen and Norris to clinch record-breaking British GP win

The Briton ended his 56-race to add to his race victories with a thrilling fight against Norris at Silverstone

Lewis Hamilton finally celebrated on the top step of the podium after a dramatic finale to the Formula 1 2024 British Grand Prix.

The Mercedes star stole the lead from Lando Norris in the pits after wet weather intruded in the middle part of the race and held his nerve to clinch his 104th career race victory – some 946 days since his last win in Saudi Arabia in 2021. He finished ahead of Max Verstappen, who fought back from fifth, with Norris finishing third.

Hamilton knew he had a fine chance to make it a record nine wins at Silverstone after starting second behind Russell following an all-British 1-2-3 in qualifying. But that soon changed.

The two Mercedes cars managed to break clear while Verstappen got past Norris at Turn 4, but this time it was a clean battle between them following their controversial clash in Austria.

On Lap 15, Norris used his DRS and battery power to surge past Verstappen on the Hangar Straight after closing the gap over a number of laps as the Red Bull RB20 looked far from its quickest in challenging conditions.

Russell made a critical error on Lap 18 and Hamilton capitalised to overtake on the Hangar Straight. But with the rain getting stronger, McLaren had so much more grip as Norris overtook Hamilton and Piastri got him on the next lap to make it a McLaren 1-2.

Sainz had found some pace as he challenged Verstappen, with both drivers opting for intermediate tyres on Lap 27 while the McLarens and Mercedes both stayed out. It was all about being on the right tyre at the right time and Piastri lost a huge chunk of time at the top, coming out in sixth by the time he pitted.

With every driver switching to inters by Lap 29, Norris led the race from Hamilton by three seconds, with Verstappen’s bold call paying off as he leapfrogged Russell and Piastri in the pits.

On Lap 34, Russell was forced to retire the car with a water system issue to bring a horrible end to his home race weekend, where he had started on pole. But there was still hope for the team, with Hamilton homing in on Norris at the front.

The sun became to come out just to add to the drama with 15 laps to go as teams moved onto the dry tyres. Hamilton went for softs, Verstappen fitted hards and Norris stayed out for one more lap. And that – in addition to a slow stop – proved costly as Hamilton surged 2.5 seconds ahead.

Worse yet, Verstappen closed in on Norris and made the pass on Lap 48, with Hamilton 3.3 seconds up the road with only four laps to go. But after a 56-race wait, this was Hamilton’s day as he celebrated a ninth win around the circuit where he has dominated since his first win in 2008;
