The Practice 3 session at the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix was fraught with incidents, creating tension among the drivers during qualifying simulations with Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, Lando Norris and Lance Stroll all being summoned to the stewards for incidents in FP3

Initially, Lewis Hamilton obstructed Lance Stroll in Turn 5 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, forcing Stroll to widen his trajectory and nearly sideswipe Hamilton’s Mercedes. Hamilton apologized over the radio, acknowledging his mistake, stating: “”My bad, I didn’t see him…”

Shortly after, another incident occurred between Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc. Leclerc was on a fast lap, while Norris was heading to the grid for practice starts.

Leclerc had to lift off and moved towards Norris’s McLaren, which was on the left, attempting to give way to the Ferrari. Norris reported potential damage via radio.

Marc Gene on Sky Sport F1 in Italy mentioned that Leclerc was visibly angry with Norris. The stewards decided to investigate both incidents after the session, ahead of qualifying.

A stewards’ document confirmed that all four drivers and team representatives were required to report to the stewards for an alleged breach of Article 33.4 of the FIA Formula One Sporting Regulations.

Any penalties resulting from this investigation could significantly impact their starting positions and overall race strategies.

Reprimand for Leclerc and Stroll

The stewards issued a reprimand to Leclerc for his incident with Norris. The stewards heard from Leclerc, Norris, team representatives, and reviewed video and radio evidence.

Leclerc stated he was upset at being impeded by Norris into Turn 5 and misjudged his car’s position, leading to slight contact. The stewards found Leclerc’s actions, were not dangerous, but erratic and issued a reprimand.

The stewards also reprimanded Lance Stroll for his incident with Lewis Hamilton during FP3. Stroll stated he was impeded by Hamilton’s Mercedes in Turn 5, leading to a minor collision.

Although Stroll expressed his displeasure by pulling over on Hamilton, the stewards considered Stroll’s move erratic, but not dangerous, and issued a driving reprimand.

Teams close in FP3

Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz set the fastest time during the third and final practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix, edging out McLaren’s Norris and teammate Leclerc.

Historically, 30 out of the 33 Grands Prix held at this venue since 1991 have been won from the front row, underlining the importance of the upcoming qualifying session.

Reigning world champion Max Verstappen was fourth, clocking a 1:13.087, with Russell slipping back to fifth. The top five drivers were separated by just a tenth of a second, highlighting the competitive nature of the session.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, carrying a three-place grid penalty into the weekend, finished seventh. Alex Albon and Fernando Alonso showcased strong performances, placing their Williams and Aston Martin cars inside the top ten. Oscar Piastri could only manage tenth, slightly behind his McLaren teammate Norris.
