Lando Norris claims Max Verstappen can ‘get away with mistakes and still win’

The McLaren driver believes Max Verstappen should not have won in Canada

After Red Bull claimed an unexpected win in Canada, Lando Norris believes that Max Verstappen can ‘get away with making mistakes’ and still win Formula 1 races thanks to the team he has around him.

The Briton arrives at the 2024 Spanish Grand Prix having finished on the podium in six of the last seven Formula 1 races and he was asked about the progress of his own team and how that can be stacked up against others.

The most recent Canadian GP was drought with drama, rain and safety cars and as far as Norris is concerned, Verstappen should not have actually won and it was the mistakes of others that opened the door.

Norris assesses Verstappen mistakes

Norris was asked by the media whether recent F1 races have shown that it takes more than just a very good car to consistently fight at the front, and the driver agreed that a quality team is needed as well.

“Yeah, 100%, especially now, probably for Max over the last four years, three years, he’s probably been able to get away with a lot of mistakes and still easily win and the team maybe made mistakes and he could still easily win,” Norris told the press ahead of the Spanish GP, including Total-Motorsport.com .

“Let’s say he shouldn’t have won last weekend in Montreal, but he was probably just the most consistent through the race. They probably made as a team the least mistakes, as a driver the least mistakes, and came out on top.”

It was George Russell who started the Canadian GP on pole after a superb qualifying session in his Mercedes, but there was a spell where a number of different drivers were in the frame for the victory.

“If you think of the safety car from our side, we should have boxed, we lost the lead on that. I lost an opportunity to fight for the win,” Norris continued.

“George [Russell] had the quickest car, was driving extremely well all weekend from an outright pace point of view and if he didn’t make a couple of the mistakes that he did do, which all drivers do, including Max, probably also should have had a chance of winning the race.

“So with that perspective you kind of think, Max shouldn’t have won and he still won the race, which just shows that even when he hasn’t had the best car and things like that, he still kind of shows what he’s capable of doing.”
