Lando Norris slams Max Verstappen for Austrian GP crash

A rather uneventful 2024 Austrian Grand Prix was brought to life in the final 15 laps when Max Verstappen and Lando Norris went wheel-to-wheel eventually coming together on Lap 64

Lando Norris slammed Max Verstappen for causing their 2024 Austrian GP crash as he insisted the Red Bull driver ruined both of their races in what became an unfair battle at the Red Bull Ring.

Verstappen had controlled the opening stint expertly and seemed set to claim his latest win of the 2024 Formula 1 season until he began to suffer gearbox problems and tyre degradation, combined with a slow pit-stop, which saw the McLaren reel in the world champion.

As the challenger to the championship leader began to close in, he launched three attacks on the 26-year-old for the lead of the race at Turn 3 but disaster would strike on the third, and final attempt when the McLaren tried to claim the racing line into Turn 3 to use DRS on the exit, setting up a move at Turn 4.

Norris braked very late on Lap 64 with them closing in on the 50 metre board, but here, the Red Bull moved across to put on the squeeze to control the line and their tyres hit each other leaving both with punctures and George Russell with the race victory.

“Disappointed. Nothing than that honestly,” Norris said, as he slams Verstappen to Sky Sports F1 after the Austrian GP. “I looked forward to a strong battle, a strong, fair battle and I wouldn’t say that’s what it was in the end so it’s a tough one to take.

“As a rule, you aren’t allowed to move after, you’re not allowed to react to the driver. He did it three times out of three and two times I managed to avoid it and not run into him and the third time he just run into me.

“He ruined his own race just as much as he ruined mine but there’s nothing more I can do. I did my best and was a was good enough, but it got ruined through not my own fault.”

Norris slams Verstappen for moving under braking

The previous two attempts saw Max Verstappen move late, to be generous, in attempts to cover off the fast-charging McLaren in front of the gathered Orange Army of his Dutch fans at the Red Bull Ring.

It’s a manoeuvre he’s been criticised for in the past, notably when he crashed with Daniel Ricciardo in 2018, and Norris wasted no time in reminding his friend of the rules in place to keep both drivers safe.

“I can only do so much,” Norris added to Sky Sports F1. “There’s rules, and if the rules aren’t followed then there’s nothing I can do about that. I just have to do my job which is go out and drive faster.”

Despite being downbeat about the loss of his second career win for something he didn’t feel was his own fault, Norris is immediately looking forwards to the final leg of this F1 triple header as the sport goes to the 2024 British GP next.

McLaren had great pace and led the race there in 2023, and now clearly being closer to Red Bull, there is a lot of optimism that they will be able to fight for pole and the win at Silverstone.

“I’ll do what I was doing today,” Norris continued. “Which was easily good enough for the win.  From my side I’ll just carry on doing what I’m doing. I’m doing a good job. I’m happy with my efforts and my improvements from yesterday to today.

“Move onto Silverstone, I can’t do anything more than what I’ve done. So, I’m happy. I’m happy with the team and everything we’re doing but I got let down today.”
