McLaren locked out the front row of the grid at the Hungaroring from Max Verstappen

Lando Norris pipped Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen to pole position in a dramatic qualifying for the 2024 Hungarian GP, which featured two red flags.

Norris edged out Piastri by 0.022s, with Verstappen only 0.046s off the leading pace to record his third pole position in Formula 1.

The British driver set his best lap on the first run in Q3, before Piastri and Verstappen improved on their second runs, which came just moments before Yuki Tsunoda had a big accident at the exit of Turn 5.

“Not an easy qualifying, different conditions like that, but always ending up on top is the best part of it all,” said Norris, who will be hoping to win for a second time in F1 on Sunday.

“We have already got confidence, so it’s not like we need a lot more of it or we are searching for it. We have come into this weekend off the back of the last few happy and confident we can do a good job and we have a good car to fight for pole, which is what we did today.

“We are in the best position for whatever the conditions throw at us. Two cars at the front row, we can control it from there, so as long as we stay where we are we’ll be happy.”

When Q3 restarted, Daniel Ricciardo was the only driver to move up the order as he qualified ninth, ahead of Tsunoda at the Hungaroring.

Carlos Sainz was fourth, in front of Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and the Aston Martin pair of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Hamilton only just got into Q3 by 0.010s as Nico Hulkenberg nearly bumped him out in the second part of qualifying.

Perez crashes out as Russell eliminated in Q1

A dramatic Q1 saw intermittent rain cause chaos as Sergio Perez crashed out of qualifying at the Hungarian GP. Perez lost control of his car at Turn 9 and hit the barriers, so has had accident in qualifying for the second F1 weekend running.

Q1 resumed with six-and-a-half minutes remaining, where the rain picked up and it looked like the drivers wouldn’t be able to go faster.

Russell was one of the first drivers to explore the conditions and managed to improve. He pitted with two minutes remaining and the track evolved significantly, so several drivers bumped Russell down the order.

Perez will start the Hungarian GP in 16th, with Russell 17th, ahead of Zhou Guanyu and the Alpines of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly.
