Lando Norris already on back foot at Silverstone after Max Verstappen incident

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris controversially collided when fighting for the lead of the 2024 Austrian GP

Lando Norris admitted his Austria collision with Max Verstappen could create problems at the 2024 British Grand Prix and beyond as McLaren scrambled to repair his damaged MCL38 for the final race in the Formula 1 triple-header.

Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty for causing the crash by driving into Norris at turn three of the Red Bull Ring as the contact caused punctures for both drivers but the Brit further damaged his floor by pushing too hard to get back to the pits.

Norris confirmed he’s all set to compete at Silverstone as planned but revealed the damage to his McLaren

“Everything’s okay, it’s longer-term stuff it’s impacted more than just this weekend,” Norris told members of the press including “We have some spare floors that were already damaged before which we’ve been able to repair and get things ready so the team’s done an amazing job.

“We knew three races in a row, easy things can go wrong and you can easily have a lot of damage and it’s not hard to damage the floor in the first place. You know, you can run over an extra kerb and it can be damaged quite easily.”

Norris: Austria damage shrank McLaren’s budget

Like every other F1 team, McLaren has a budget of $135million for almost all their operations including repairing Norris‘ machinery. Crash damage has hit Williams the hardest in 2024 but with McLaren battling Verstappen‘s Red Bull for grand prix victories and potentially the world championship, both teams need every penny.

However, Red Bull are currently estimated to have paid the highest penalty for collisions on the 2024 F1 grid (81% from Sergio Perez) and McLaren the least – the only team with projected costs of less than a million dollars.

“The team has done a good job to make sure we’ve had enough and we’ve got some more for this weekend and some repaired ones so maybe not in a perfect place,” Norris added. “But yeah, like sideboard and brake ducts are the kind of things, they will all add up.

“And when you’re in a tight fight for championship and you’re pushing hard you’re always trying to push the boundaries of everything just like the racing is with the budget cap and upgrades and CFD or those types of things.

“You just want every bit of money possible, so yeah bit of a shame but the team has done a good job to make sure everything’s ready.”
