Lando Norris brushes off Verstappen and issues British GP warning

The Briton is gearing up for another battle at Silverstone but Verstappen may be at the back of his mind during Sunday's race

-

Lando Norris insisted he is not worried about the threat Max Verstappen could pose to him during the Formula 1 2024 British Grand Prix.

The McLaren star will start the British GP on the second row alongside the Red Bull driver after qualifying third on Saturday, with Verstappen only able to manage fourth as Mercedes duo George Russell and Lewis Hamilton led a surprise 1-2 for the team at Silverstone.

That means they could be set for another feisty clash just days after resolving the row that unfolded between them at the Austrian GP, when Verstappen was handed a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with Norris during an absorbing battle for the lead.

Norris was forced to retire and lost 18 world championship points in the process at the Red Bull Ring. But the 24-year-old made it clear he isn’t fazed about a repeat of their clash or being passed by Verstappen heading into Abbey (Turn 1) at the Northamptonshire circuit.

“I’m sure Max is going to be racing us tomorrow but I’ve still got two other guys I’ve got to worry about, so I don’t care just about Red Bull,” Norris told the written press at Silverstone, including Total Motorsport.com.

Norris: British GP victory within McLaren’s sights

Norris was in a boisterous mood after out-qualifying Verstappen and his team-mate Oscar Piastri, making up the final part of the first-ever all-British podium in qualifying at the British GP.

But his positive mood may have also had something to do with McLaren’s pace in the rain-soaked FP1 and FP2 sessions, where the Woking team were clearly fastest and extremely quick in a straight line on the Hangar straight.

Norris has also been inside the top four in every race that he has finished since the Japanese GP, demonstrating McLaren’s consistent pace at the front. And he is adamant the British team are in contention for the race victory on Sunday.

“I think our strategy has been very good over the last two months. I’m happy the team are doing a good job and therefore confident we can execute a good race, but we need to be able to race well,” Norris added.

“I need to pass two guys [Russell and Hamilton] if that’s going to be on the cards. I’m confident from what we know and what we’ve seen over the last few races that we can go forwards.”
