Lando Norris leads McLaren double at British GP in soggy FP2

Lando Norris led his McLaren teammate in FP2 at the 2024 British GP but the picture behind is still murky

McLaren continue to set the pace at the 2024 British Grand Prix as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri topped the timesheets in a jumbled FP2, though Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg‘s presence in the top five suggests there’s more to come from the other contenders.

On the day the British public got clarity on how the nation’s future will look, British F1 fans also got an inkling of what could be in store for the 2024 British GP after FP2 as McLaren doubled up on Friday with Norris also best in FP1.

Charles Leclerc was fifth behind the unexpected Red Bull and Haas, as rain that threatened to washout the whole session only hit Silverstone in the last 15 minutes to prevent any final qualifying simulations.

That only adds to the confusion surrounding the picture behind McLaren with Leclerc only separated from twelfth-placed Valtteri Bottas by 0.231 seconds with Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz and the Mercedes and Aston Martin pairs embedded within that pack.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for Norris though, he requested McLaren inspect his floor after admitting his collision with Verstappen at the Austrian GP less than a week ago had set the team back as they raced to fix his MCL38 for Silverstone.

Did British GP FP2 hint at double-resurgence?

Given the fallout from the VerstappenNorris clash, Aston Martin poaching Andy Cowell slipped somewhat under the radar in the F1 world, though the former Mercedes engine boss won’t take up his role as group CEO until October.

However, he may well have been buoyed by Aston Martin‘s progress in FP1 and FP2 at the British GP as they matched McLaren as the initial teams to watch this afternoon before fading as rivals set their hot laps later in the session.

Meanwhile Perez‘s Red Bull future has been one of the hot topics at Silverstone with Helmut Marko questioning the likelihood of the Mexican seeing out his newly-extended contract.

He’ll be looking for a response at the British GP and showed signs of that in FP2, his first time on track this weekend after Isack Hadjar took the wheel of the RB20 earlier.
