Norris gives harsh self-assessment of Saudi Arabian GP performance

The Brit lost the lead of the drivers’ championship on Sunday

Lando Norris admits he got the best result he could from the F1 2025 Saudi Arabian GP but hands himself a harsh self-assessment at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, demanding more from his skills.

The 25-year-old’s crash at Turn 5 on Saturday ensured his chances of winning were a write off, literally and figuratively, as he started from 10th on the grid with Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri on the front row.

But he bring his race to life by managing to quickly pick his way through the slower cars ahead of him to move into the top six by Lap 15 and take fifth place on Lap 19, running the hard compound tyres.

Showing quick pace, enough to eventually secure the fastest lap, he breezed past Mercedes’ George Russell and chased down Charles Leclerc; but despite his hounding efforts against the Ferrari, had to settle for fourth.

It’s the first time Norris has not appeared on the podium in this F1 2025 season, but remains fairly upbeat about his Grand Prix performance although he gives a harsh self-assessment of his qualifying at the Saudi Arabian GP.

“I think it was the best we could’ve done today,” Norris told Sky Sports F1. “It’s a shame to have missed out on the podium. We were close. It’s always hard to judge those things.

“Charles drove a good race. He did a good first stint and gave himself the opportunity to have a decent set of tyres in the second half and I think he only boxed three or four laps after [before] me.

“Not enough to get him, but I’m pleased on a whole. I make life tough for myself, especially in a race like that. It would’ve been much easier, much more chill drive at the front.

“In some ways it’s a bit easier so I’ve got to help myself out a bit and have better Saturdays.”
