Lando Norris brands Verstappen ‘desperate’ and attacks ‘reckless’ driving style

Lando Norris had strong words for Max Verstappen, who crossed the limit at the 2024 Austrian GP and caused the McLaren to DNF.

Lando Norris declared Max Verstappen was “desperate” during their fight at the 2024 Austrian GP as the Red Bull driver caused their crash, leaving the McLaren star warning of the impact at the British GP in Silverstone.

The pair made contact on Lap 64 when the world champion rushed across the track to cover off a switchback attempt as they duelled for the lead of the 71-lap race, leaving both with a puncture as their chances of victory faded away leaving George Russell the win at the Red Bull Ring instead.

And it was far from an isolated incident after Verstappen had made two moves under braking in previous laps, clear violations of Formula 1 regulations regarding dangerous driving, leaving him with a 10-second time penalty added as he finished in fifth as Norris called him out.

“There’s rules for what you’re not allowed to do when you’re allowed to do,” Norris told members of the media, including Total-Motorsport.com. “He was doing things you’re not allowed to do and not getting penalised, so, look, I expect a tough battle against Max.

“I know what to expect. I expect aggression and pushing the limits and that kind of thing, but all three times. He’s doing stuff which can easily cause an incident and in a way, just a bit reckless and it seemed like a little bit desperate from him and he doesn’t need to be.

“He’s got plenty of wins, but a bit desperate to do what he could to not let me pass and I know it’s going to be aggressive, so I like I’m in a way not surprised, but I just expected a tough, fair, respectful on the edge, a bit of racing and I don’t feel like that’s what I got to say.”

Norris warns of impact on 2024 British GP

Norris suffered a puncture from the “desperate” Verstappen defence, with a long way to limp home, before he finally retired from the F1 race with damage on his stricken papaya McLaren car but the impact might not be limited to the 2024 Austrian GP.

Norris also criticised the defending for the impact it could have on the 2024 British GP, which takes place on July 7, with McLaren facing a five-day turnaround before they have to be on track for Free Practice 1 next Friday.

“I’m disappointed he ruined my race and destroyed my car,” Norris added to media. “It’s all some of the best bits on the car. We don’t have a lot of spares in in the battle that we’re in in terms of upgrades, budget cap and things like that.

So, my whole car’s destroyed, and these are all the bits that we needed for next week. So, it’s not just a repercussion of what happens on the track. It’s everything, that now we have to carry on Silverstone and be disadvantaged by that.”
