Jacques Villeneuve tears into Daniel Ricciardo and urges him to quit F1 in extraordinary rant

The Canadian believes Ricciardo should give up racing in F1 after struggling to impress over the last five years

Daniel Ricciardo has been told to quit Formula 1 by former world champion Jacques Villeneuve, who launched a scathing attack on the Visa Cash App RB driver for making “excuses” regarding his disappointing results.

Ricciardo, 34, collected his first world championship points in the Miami GP Sprint race, but he is yet to score a point in a main race event this season, while his team-mate Yuki Tsunoda has finished in the top eight on three occasions already.

And Villeneuve, who won the drivers’ championship with Williams in 1997, is clearly fed up with hearing Ricciardo’s excuses for his perceived poor performances as he questioned why he is still racing in F1.

“Why is he still in F1? Why? We’re hearing the same thing now for the last four or five years ‘we have to make the car better for him’. No, sorry. Five years of that? You’re in F1,” Villeneuve said, speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports F1.

“Maybe you make that effort for Lewis [Hamilton] because he’s won multiple championships… you don’t make that effort for a driver who can’t cut it.

“If you can’t cut it, go home and let someone else take your place. That’s how it’s always been in racing, it’s the pinnacle of the sport. There’s no reason to keep finding excuses.”

Ricciardo candid about Red Bull snub

Villeneuve’s brutal assessment comes after Ricciardo was once again overlooked by Red Bull for the second seat in 2025, with Sergio Perez signing a new two-year deal with the team despite questions over his future.

The Australian took up a permanent seat with RB this year after replacing Nyck de Vries midway through last season. It comes after Ricciardo spent a year as Red Bull’s reserve driver, having been axed by McLaren at the end of the 2022 campaign, and he was targeting a potential second stint with the team.

But Ricciardo cast a glum figure in front of the media when quizzed on the topic ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, and the eight-time race winner admitted he “hadn’t been awesome enough” to secure an emotional return to Red Bull.

“I don’t think it changes anything for me. Obviously, my goal, at some point, I’d love to be back there [at Red Bull]. But I also know that my season hasn’t been spectacular,” Ricciardo told the press in Canada, including Total-Motorsport.com.

“I had a spectacular moment I think in Miami, but otherwise, I’ve been a bit up and down. And look, I’ve been doing this long enough, I know myself that I want to be doing better.”
