In a significant twist ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season, Aston Martin are reportedly targeting George Russell as a key acquisition by trying to convince the Brit to ditch Mercedes, but is he set to do it?
The interest in the talented 27-year-old driver signals a potential upheaval in the F1 driver market, with multiple top-tier teams manoeuvering for strategic advantage under the upcoming regulation changes.
Currently in the final year of his contract with the Silver Arrows, he has been spotted with several rival outfits as contract negotiations continue behind the closed doors of Toto Wolff’s team.

He was spotted in conversation with McLaren executives at the Australian GP, and also observed interacting with Alpine’s Flavio Briatore and Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, suggesting he could be shopping around.
His potential switch to Aston Martin comes as the Silverstone-based team gears up for a major transformation as they target challenging the established elite of McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull.
From 2026, they will begin their exclusive engine partnership with Honda and will fully tap into the talents and knowledge of a renowned technical mastermind, Adrian Newey, who is overseeing the development of their challenger.

Where does the Russell and Aston Martin links leave Max Verstappen?
Aston Martin’s interest in Russell arrives amid further rumours that Mercedes may be preparing a blockbuster bid for the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, who is reportedly discontent with Red Bull’s RB21 performance.
He could be considering an exit after over ten years with the team if they fail to maintain a competitive edge, Verstappen may step away to a rival, retirement or a different racing series such as the World Endurance Championship.
However, Wolff remains confident about retaining Russell and is sure his driver isn’t set to ditch Mercedes just over one year after Lewis Hamilton did the same thing to join Ferrari.
“George and I are totally clear about how this is going to go,” Wolff told reporters. “There is 100 percent alignment.
“There is no such thing as dragging this on, because that is not what we do.”

Still, the possibility of Russell making a bold move to Aston Martin cannot be ruled out. The team has denied rumours of a £221m/$300 million offer for Verstappen and remains officially committed to its current lineup of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Yet behind the scenes, preparations for a reshuffle appear to be underway. Should the man from Kings Lynn opt to leave, Verstappen could become Mercedes‘ top target, flipping the paddock dynamic.
The two drivers may “box opposite” one another, in classic F1 terminology, depending on who moves first, triggering a domino effect that reshapes the sport’s competitive balance heading into the 2026 season.
