IndyCar serves up stinker to kickstart May as Palou wins Indy GP

Alex Palou won't care about the entertainment factor, because only the points count when the chequered flag falls in Nashville

-

It’s the Month of May, but if the Indy 500 is anything like the 2024 Indianapolis Grand Prix then we’ll all forget it ever happened, for IndyCar‘s sake.

A tense and tight qualifying had built hopes of a really exciting race with high-speed battles galore but it quickly became apparent that we were going to be let down as four cars pulled away out front.

Alex Palou, who started on pole, had to retake top spot from Christian Lundgaard during the second pit phase as Will Power also got involved in the scrap but the reigning champion was good enough to pull away and take his first points victory of the season.

Power also jumped the Dane during the final stops as all four of the leaders, which also included Scott Dixon, made their stops on the same lap to go to the end. but the on-track action was severely lacking.

Other than a very tight opening corner and Santino Ferrucci being typically… robust in his scrap with Romain Grosjean, there really wasn’t much you’d mention to your mates down the pub, not what IndyCar needs or wants heading into the big race.

IndyCar’s best and worst race in one month

We all eagerly await the arrival of May every year for the biggest motorsport event on Earth, the Indy 500, so it’s a shame that the Grand Prix on the road course seems to have so little character to it.

Maybe the fact that we’ve seen two Indianapolis road course races a season recently dents the special nature of IMS but the series already spends two whole weeks at the home of motorsports, we really don’t need this race.

And with the fuel windows making this a guaranteed three-stop race, there is hardly any strategy to think about and in practice, a race where no management is needed is usually rather dull.

Truthfully, the teams have done this exact race too many times now and they all know exactly how to play it. Indianapolis needs to be left to the big one where its charm exudes.

IndyCar as a series needs a lot of eyes watching right now to drum up interest in the hybrid technology and you have to think with Formula 1 in Miami just a week prior, could they have struck a deal to host a joint weekend?

We saw F1 have a surprisingly good race at the Hard Rock Stadium with Lando Norris taking his first win and if they can put on a show, you bet IndyCar could have gone even better.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the whole Andretti saga makes ties between the two series’ tense right now but there are issues on the horizon for Roger Penske and IndyCar right now, they need all the help they can get.
